Ericsson demonstrates Fiber-to-the-Home solutions to spur fixed broadband scene in Malaysia

In conjunction with the Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Council Asia Pacific Conference 2008, held for the first time in Malaysia, Ericsson showcased its Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) system for Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) with the EDA 1500, while introducing other exciting content enabled by high speed broadband.

Ericsson shared its global experiences which showed that GPON is currently one of the most popular FTTH technologies with major operators. GPON will be the leading fiber access standard and an important part of Ericsson's broadband offering.

Studies show that the trend toward higher bandwidth, “media-rich” and cutting edge services like IPTV and High Definition Television (HDTV) is driving the need for higher speeds and IP-based networks.

“Ericsson has the most competitive broadband offering today, fixed and mobile, and we are continuously driving the industry forward in this area globally, partnering closely with operators. Recent wins in fixed broadband includes AT&T (USA), CYTA (Cyprus), Deutsche Telecom (Germany) and Grameen Cybernet Limited (Bangladesh), amongst others,” said Colin Goodwin, Strategic Marketing Manager for Ericsson Australia-New Zealand and Board member of the FTTH Council Asia Pacific.

Krishna Kumar, President & Country Manager of Ericsson Malaysia, says: “There are immense opportunities for new services with the advent of high speed broadband in Malaysia. The National Broadband Plan aims to see 50% of household broadband penetration by 2010. In line with that, the Ministry of Energy, Water & Communications recently announced the implementation of the RM11.3 billion Phase 1 broadband project with Telekom Malaysia. Ericsson is supportive of this move to encourage the uptake of broadband in the country.”

In a recent statement by the Ministry of Energy, Water and Communications, Malaysia’s broadband penetration rate is currently at 18%, which is lower than other more developed nations in Asia like Singapore (at 78%), Hong Kong (80%) and Korea (93%).

About Ericsson’s Fiber-To-The-Home solution
Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) is one of the broadband technologies for the mass market. FTTH enables the simultaneous transportation of several services, such as very fast Internet, telephony and television, via one optic fiber. With FTTH, the access network is able to deliver a speed of 100 Mbps and even 1 Gbps. This creates an access network with nearly unrestricted possibilities. This technology supports a complete open business model in which consumers can choose any service supplier. Last year, Ericsson's offering in the areas of fixed broadband access portfolio and converged networks was significantly strengthened by the acquisition on Entrisphere, adding a market-leading GPON platform as a complement to our fiber P2P solutions. Both type of fiber solutions forms parts of the EDA portfolio along with our broadband DSL solutions. The Entrisphere acquisition brings a leading IP based broadband access platform ready for volume deployment compliant with both North American and international standards.
