SMS is now 20 years old. The first text message was sent on December 3, 1992 in the UK and Ericsson was one of the key contributors to the standard. Prepaid charging systems helped mobile telephony and SMS take off a few years later. 2011 almost 10 trillion texts were sent in, and the technology can now change lives and improve safety.

Not many 20-year-olds can seriously claim to have changed the world, but that could be said about SMS, or text messaging as it’s also known. Twenty years on from the first text message – sent on December 3, 1992 – we look at how the technology rose from humble beginnings to become the world’s most popular data application.

Today is the 20th anniversary of the first commercial call placed on GSM network. Ericsson’s own Jan Wäreby was there, calling then-General Director of Televerket, Sweden’s former national telecommunications agency, now part of TeliaSonera.

Kjell Hansson is unique within telecoms. His impressive 49 years in the industry have been spent with, or affiliated to, Ericsson. As the company’s longest-serving employee, he has witnessed many changes, including the birth of mobility and its evolution through the data revolution towards the Networked Society. He says Ericsson offers him as many opportunities now as it did when his career kicked off almost half a century ago.
