In the latest round of GSM network construction, China Mobile Guangxi Branch and Ericsson have joined together to deploy world’s first City Site, an innovative radio site solution, which has been put into commercial use on a trial basis.

Ericsson ConsumerLab’s latest Networked Society City Index report shows that the number of urban residents on the planet is increasing by 5 million every month. In 2050, cities, which only account for 1 percent of the total area of the planet, will hold 70 percent of the world’s population. Currently, China’s urban construction is in full swing, and its mobile network coverage is rising. In the increasingly crowded urban environment, however, ensuring the quality of mobile-network coverage has become a problem.

In order to meet this challenge, Ericsson has launched the City Site integrated solution, and successfully applied it to China Mobile’s GSM network in Nanning, Guangxi. The City Site, which has been deployed with the standard RBS6601 base station, has an integrated Omni Antenna, which only covers a small area and is, therefore, easy to deploy. It could also be launched with just access to power and transmission cables.

According to the test of the live network, the City Site has effectively met the capacity and quality needs of network coverage, as well as ensuring excellent user experience.

In addition, the City Site has also been equipped with functions such as electronic advertising, clock and public information inquires with touch-screen technology. Operators now can not only enhance the mobile coverage but also launch more value-added services via the City site.

The City Site has fewer limitations for site selection compared with standard radio base station, as it can be deployed in crowded areas, and is suitable for a variety of places, such as railway stations, business districts, schools, parks, squares, and main avenues. While enriching the base station building approaches, it provides users with an excellent and satisfactory network experience. Ericsson will continue to cooperate with China Mobile to apply the City Site more extensively through further research.

Telstra and Ericsson have successfully conducted the first trial of 1Tbps technology in Australia over 995km of its existing optical fiber network between Sydney and Melbourne.

Ericsson has demonstrated optical technology leadership by taking ultra-fast terabit transmission out of the lab and verifying its performance over real operator optical cables. The successful test confirms that operators will be in a position to deploy it to meet their capacity requirements when 1Tbps is eventually commercialized.

"This has been over two years in the making, and our teams have collaboratively come together to demonstrate the evolution of technology," says David Robertson, Director of Transport and Routing Engineering, Telstra. "Telstra actually owns the most fiber in the country. To be able to prove that the fiber we have in the ground can carry terabit services is a fantastic position for us to be in."

"Like so many developed countries, Australia is a very technologically advanced market and Australians are sophisticated users of broadband and mobile technology," says Alessandro Pane, Head of Ericsson R&D Optical Transmission. "The trial has proven that our existing optical cable plant can support terabit channels along with 40Gbps and 100Gbps channels simultaneously on the same fiber."

Ericsson has announced it will provide Telstra with the SPO 1400, the latest packet optical transport platform (POTP) for the metro and the MHL 3000 for long-haul applications with 100Gbps service support. The trial tested a 1Tbps line card in the MHL 3000.

The terabit solution used in the trial has some important advantages, including innovative frequency packing for high spectral efficiency, software configurable optical characteristics and advanced forward error correction for superior performance of the communications channel.

"With the growing demand on our networks for new services and capabilities, knowing that our infrastructure can grow to meet those requirements is very important for us," says Andrew Leong, Principal Domain Expert, Optical, Telstra. "Ericsson has been a close strategic partner of Telstra for many years, and it was good to continue that close collaboration and working to make sure that this trial was a success."

Ericsson will deploy a 4G network for the leading Icelandic operator Síminn

The agreement will strengthen Síminn’s position to serve its subscribers in both central and remote areas of the country

Ericsson Síminn will join their forces to provide access to innovative mobile broadband services, anywhere and anytime, and open new and exciting opportunities for the Icelandic consumers.

Síminn (Iceland Telecom) entered into a strategic partnership with Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) to upgrade its 3G network and prepare for 4G roll-out across Iceland. With this, subscribers will experience higher speeds and benefit from improved network performance.

Under the five-year agreement, Ericsson will be the supplier of 4G/3G/2G radio access equipment and the common core network. Ericsson will also expand all relevant network software and deliver a range of professional services, including project management, systems integration and support.

Sævar Freyr Thráinsson, CEO Síminn, “The reason we are strengthening our 3G connections, despite the advent of 4G technology, is that not all our customers have smartphones or computers that support 4G. Only a fraction of the phones using our network are smartphones at the moment. We want to improve services to customers without forcing them to invest in expensive devices but still benefit from high mobile internet speed. Síminn is focusing on building a 4G network for people on the move and they will now be assured a good connection for their phones, tablets and laptops throughout the country.”

Ann Emilson, Vice President CU Nordic & Baltic operators, “With this agreement we further strengthen our long term strategic business relationship with Síminn and we are glad to be entrusted with the deployment of the next generation mobile network across Iceland so that the subscribers can enjoy enhanced mobile experience and reliable services. This partnership will enable new exciting opportunities for business, society and people in the country. Being a global LTE leader, Ericsson is committed to help Síminn meeting the growing demand for mobile broadband in Iceland.”

Ericsson is the market leader in commercial mobile broadband networks in the world, chosen by about half of the world’s telecom operators. The contract between Síminn and Ericsson strengthens the long term strategic partnership with the leading Icelandic operator and is designed to keep Síminn‘s customers on the best cellular network in existence.

The initial LTE roll-out is planned for fall 2013.

Five-year agreement to manage Vip mobile’s network in Serbia

Ericsson extends its managed services footprint in Europe with its first managed services contract in Serbia

20 Vip’s field engineers will join Ericsson in April 2013

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) has signed a five-year managed services contract with Vip mobile in Serbia. Vip mobile is part of the Telekom Austria Group, a leading provider of mobile as well as fixed communication services in Central and Eastern Europe.

The five-year agreement covers field maintenance services for access equipment and site infrastructure and will involve the transfer of 20 Vip employees. Ericsson will provide high quality services, delivered through people with the right skills, in the right place, at the right time and at a cost level which enables both Ericsson and Vip mobile to accomplish their business objectives.

Mr. Dejan Kastelic, CTO of Vip mobile, says: “We were looking for a reliable and professional managed services partner. Today, we are happy to announce our partnership with Ericsson. We believe this contract will deliver even more effective and integrated handling and management of our networks and service delivery. Also Ericsson’s regional team will be strengthened with 20 excellent field engineers who have been developing their professional skills in last years within Vip ".

Valter D’Avino, Head of Managed Services at Ericsson, says: “This is the first managed service contract in Serbia for Ericsson, but at the same time it is an extension of the managed services partnership we entered into with the Telekom Austria Group in 2012. We are proud to extend this partnership to other countries in a multi-country approach and to ensure that the networks of the group are run with the highest quality".

By teaming up with Ericsson in managed services, operators can strengthen their competitive edge through improved network availability and capacity, while reducing their operating costs. This drives the market for mobile services and helps improve the quality of services and the user experience. Globally, Ericsson has signed more than 300 managed services contracts in more than 100 countries. Ericsson manages networks on behalf of operators that serve more than 950 million subscribers worldwide.

Ericsson adds the SPO 1485 Multiservice DWDM to its metro regional/core Packet Optical Transport Platform (POTP) solution

Operators can balance metro core packet and Optical Transport Network (OTN) with the Ericsson SPO 1400 family of POTPs

Ericsson’s SPO 1485 addresses the need for low TCO metro core 10Gbps service and 100Gbps transport

Ericsson is expanding its line of SPO Packet Optical Transport Platform (POTP) products and the new products will be showcased at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC) and the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (NFOEC) this week in Anaheim, California. The new SPO 1485 Multiservice Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) enhances network operator’s flexibility for the metro core with high 10Gbps service density and low power profile for a lower total cost of ownership (TCO).

The metro network is facing an ever increasing demand for more capacity and performance as the Networked Society consumes more broadband, video and cloud-based services. As part of Ericsson’s 4th generation IP network portfolio, the SPO family of POTPs provides a simple, easy-to-scale, high-performing and high-value solution to help network operators meet these demands.

Network operators leveraging Ericsson’s SPO 1400 POTP family have the flexibility to use DWDM, packet, OTN or SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) switching and transport where needed for lower TCO compared to single-technology and platform solutions. The SPO POTP metro solution also provides the most effective means to migrate an existing SDH/SONET (Synchronous Optical Networking) metro to packet or OTN. The SPO offering extends from the customer premise, through the metro access/aggregation to the metro regional/core under a single network management system – IP Transport NMS.

The new SPO 1485 addresses the need for simple, low-TCO 10Gbps service connectivity, 10Gbps transport and the latest in low-latency, long distance coherent 100Gbps transport. Along with the SPO 1480 and its centralized 3.2Tbps OTN, packet and SDH switch and the SPO’s external 96 channel 2-way, 4-way and 9-way Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexers (ROADMs), network operators can scale their metro core networking and capacity to cost effectively match their business. The new SPO 1485 upholds the SPO 1400 family’s key characteristics of low power profile and high-capacity density.

Tomislav Migotti, Head of Optical & Broadband Access, Ericsson, says: "Our customers like the scalability and flexibility that our SPO 1400 metro regional/core solution offers. With the SPO 1485, operators now have the flexibility to balance between deploying a SPO 1480 POTP for OTN/Packet and SDH switching and 100Gbps transport or the SPO 1485 for simple multiservice DWDM 10Gbps and 100Gbps transport. With end-to-end management from IPT NMS and our Optical Network Planner, operators can plan, deploy and manage their greatest asset – their network."

Attendees of OFC/NFOEC can visit Ericsson at booth #2119 and see the SPO 1400 metro solution as well as Ericsson’s Service Provider Software Defined Networking (SDN) and the latest in real 1Tbps transport trials.

One terabit is equal to 1000 gigabits.

The successful test over the 995 kilometer optical link between Sydney and Melbourne in Australia shows it is possible to deploy 1Tbps technology in a real network environment. Furthermore, when 1Tbps is commercialized, operators will be in a position to deploy it to meet their capacity requirements.

Telstra Director Transport & Routing Engineering, David Robertson says: "We are currently upgrading our optical transmission networks with Ericsson's next generation 100Gbps technology and this trial demonstrates that the higher 1Tbps speeds are possible.

"The trial has proven that our existing optical cable plant can support Tbps channels along with 40Gbps and 100Gbps channels simultaneously on the same fibre, verifying that we have the ability to increase capacity on our existing fiber cables when required." Alessandro Pane, Head of Ericsson R&D Optical Transmission, says: "Like so many developed countries, Australia is a very technologically advanced market and Australians are sophisticated users of broadband and mobile technology. In addition, there is widespread smart phone, tablet, IPTV and HDTV take-up. Supporting all these services requires an ever-growing capacity in backhaul and inter-city transmission.

"Telstra is a key account for Ericsson and we frequently partner to trial new technology and products. This trial provides insights that are valuable to the Australian market and operators worldwide."

Ericsson recently announced it will provide Telstra with the SPO 1400, the latest packet optical transport platform (POTP) for the metro and the MHL 3000 for long-haul applications with 100Gbps service support. The trial tested a 1Tbps line card in the MHL 3000.

Ericsson's terabit solution, which was used in the trial, has some important advantages: the optical characteristics are software configurable; innovative frequency packing for high spectral efficiency; and advanced forward error correction for superior performance of the communications channel.

NOTES TO EDITORS
Download high-resolution photos and broadcast-quality video at www.ericsson.com/press

Ericsson is a world-leading provider of communications technology and services.
Maintained share of global installed base of radio base stations at 40%, and the number 1 position in both mobile equipment market as well as LTE specifically

Following a very strong 2011, market share for mobile network equipment declined somewhat from 38% in 2011 to 35% in 2012, leading to a somewhat lower market share for the network equipment market going from 27% in 2011 to 24% in 2012

Strong year for Global Services leading to continued increase in telecom services market share to 13%, in a strong lead before the closest competitor

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) has today in conjunction to publishing its Annual Report for 2012 also published preliminary market share estimates for 2012.

During 2011, Ericsson introduced a wider definition of the equipment market reflecting the company's R&D investments during the past years. This new definition includes the key segments Radio, IP and Transport as well as Core. Preliminary market data indicates that the market share was at 24%, down from 27% in 2011. The decline is due to lower market share in the mobile equipment market, at 35% down from 38% in 2011, negatively impacted by the ongoing technology shift in China where investments are moving from GSM to other technology areas where Ericsson has limited presence. Ericsson maintained its share of the global installed base of radio base stations at 40%.

Ericsson's market share for LTE is twice as big as the largest competitor, measured in shipments for the full year 2012. This makes Ericsson the world's largest supplier of LTE. The LTE technology is still in an early build-out phase.

In telecom services, internal market data indicates that the company increased its market share to 13% making it larger than any competitor in a fragmented market. After the acquisition of Telcordia, consolidated as of January 2012, Ericsson also has a leading position in the OSS and BSS market.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The share of installed radio base stations worldwide is calculated based on the accumulated shipments of base stations since 2004.

The market shares for mobile equipment market and key segments are calculated as Ericsson's share of total network equipment sales to service providers during each year.

The market share for telecom services market is calculated as Ericsson's share of total telecom services sales to service providers during each year.

NOTES TO EDITORS

Download high-resolution photos and broadcast-quality video at www.ericsson.com/press

Ericsson is the world's leading provider of communications technology and services.

Contract signed with dtac Network for 3G network rollout to meet growing data-traffic demand

Users to enjoy improved smartphone performance, faster web browsing and downloads, and better network performance in dense areas

Improved network capacity for dtac Network, delivering enhanced WCDMA/HSPA services and preparing for LTE

With a population of 67 million, Thailand has a mobile uptake rate of more than 120 percent and one of the world's youngest internet users on average: almost half of these are between age 15 and 24 and three-quarters are under 35. Broadband is booming and the country's annual growth rate in data traffic has been around 30 percent in recent years. To meet the needs of this avid and data-hungry generation of users, dtac Network, a subsidiary of Thailand's second-largest mobile operator dtac, has signed a contract with Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) for 3G network rollout.

The contract reinforces the ongoing partnership between the two, which began in 2011 when dtac selected Ericsson to transform its GSM network to WCDMA/HSPA. The 3G rollout has already started, and once completed consumers can expect a superior user experience when browsing the internet on their smartphones or downloading movies at much faster speeds. By deploying its WCDMA/HSPA network, dtac Network will ensure improved network capacity and enhanced performance in Bangkok and the central and eastern regions.. The operator will also have a cost-effective network ready for continued data-traffic growth, offering enhanced mobile broadband services based on WCDMA/HSPA, while preparing for LTE.

Jon Eddy Abdullah, CEO of dtac, says: "We are pleased to roll out 3G services and we're convinced it will lead to many advantages not only for our users, who will enjoy better and faster access to information through our high-speed network, but will also foster entrepreneurship and active development among mobile operators, vendors, application developers and content producers. It will also contribute to national economic and social development because our 3G network will reach people in all regions of the country."

Joacim Damgard, President of Ericsson Thailand says: "This contract is important, not only for Ericsson because we are expanding our footprint in the country, but also in terms of realizing the Networked Society. Through this network rollout, we are enabling Thai citizens to access 3G services that can enrich their everyday lives."

By deploying the latest core and radio access technology from Ericsson, dtac will be ready to offer mobile broadband services based on HSPA and LTE technologies. The contract includes Ericsson's RBS 6000 multi-standard radio base stations, MSC Server Blade Cluster and User Data Management, as well as Evolved Packet Core and circuit core solutions.

During Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona, Ericsson showcases its combined technology and services leadership for the ICT industry. Our solutions deliver superior network performance in the field, enable complete customer experience management, and simplify and automate operations workflows - thereby leading to operational excellence. We show how the Networked Society comes to life - what it will mean for the industry and how it will enable our customers to capture growth opportunities.

NOTES TO EDITORS

About dtac Network

A wholly owned subsidiary of Total Access Communication Public Company Limited (dtac), dtac Network received the spectrum license for International Mobile Telecommunications in the 2.1GHz frequency band in December 2012.

With about 24 million customers, dtac is the second-largest mobile operator in Thailand.

Press release:

DTAC prepares for data growth with Ericsson: http://www.ericsson.com/news/1482344

Download high-resolution photos and broadcast-quality video at www.ericsson.com/press

Ericsson is the world's leading provider of communications technology and services. The collaboration is in partnership with Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC), At Night Management, and Universal Music Sweden.

The Avicii x You project ran for nearly seven weeks and hosted online submissions of musical snippets from more than 4,000 artists from around the world. Avicii selected weekly semi finalists and fans voted for the final sounds and beats, which Avicii used to create a finished track in his studio in Los Angeles. Sounds on the site have been played almost a million times.

The project demonstrates the full transformation of the music industry in a Networked Society. Until now, the entertainment industry has relied on the fundamental assets of mobility, broadband and cloud for distribution and consumption. This project shows the relevance of those assets also in creation and production.

At the world premiere event at Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona, Ericsson President and CEO Hans Vestberg presented the project. He said: "I am excited to see the possibilities and the creativity come alive into one song crafted by Avicii and all the fans. It starts a flow of thinking for all industries to re-invent the way they collaborate across time and borders. Music is one of the first industries being transformed by networking, collaboration and new technologies. We now see TV, publishing and the whole entertainment industry going down the same path."

Social technologies are now a central part of everyday life and work. Crowdsourcing is a strong trend which leads to change in organizations and enables new ideas to turn into products, according to Ericsson's ConsumerLab insights.

Onstage, Avicii said: "I think it's cool that people will be able to hear this track on the radio and know that they've all been part of creating it. Five years ago, this would not have been possible and now we have the whole world collaborating. Imagine what will happen in five, ten years from now when everyone everywhere is connected."

Per Sundin, Managing Director of Universal Music Sweden, says: "I am proud to be a part of the Avicii x You project, a project that shows what we can do by working together and using the technologies to push the boundaries in our industry. It will be very interesting to continue to follow this project as we release the track."

During Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona, Ericsson showcases its combined technology and services leadership for the Information and Communications Technology industry. The technology and expertise in the community eventually led to expanding applications, raising the spirit of entrepreneurship and possibility for employment.

A survey conducted by an independent party, the Agency for Support of Entrepreneurs and Small Businessmen, finds that 92% of respondents believe that mobile telephony and internet services have played a major role in the development of the region. 53% of respondents believe that telephony services contributed to the creation of companies and jobs.

The first radio base station was installed in 2009 in the town of Belterra, Pará, Brazil. As planned, the base station provided an initial 20,000 people with 3G voice and data services in an area that previously had no mobile connectivity. This in itself was a remarkable feat, but technicians noticed that something unexpected was happening: the nearby Tapajós River was acting like a mirror, magnifying the range of the 3G signal. This allowed the Abaré Hospital boat, which navigates along the river, to be connected via broadband in 2010.

The expansion to Suruacá, on the other bank of the Tapajós River was unique in the deployment itself, which was difficult due to dense vegetation, lack of infrastructure and unpredictable weather. There was no source of energy in the village so Ericsson built an innovative hybrid system (solar and wind), which enabled a fully functional mobile network in the Amazon.

During the four years of the project, the public-private partnership supported the creation of a number of initiatives improving conditions for people in the local communities.

For example, Saúde & Alegria uses the Abaré, a large boat, to provide health-care services to the inhabitants of the more than 70 communities along the Tapajós River. Telefonica Vivo installed an antenna on the boat, ensuring that the 3G signal that was being magnified naturally by the river would be boosted even further. As a result, anyone aboard the Abaré now has access to a reliable mobile broadband connection. Doctors aboard the Abaré can consult with their peers around the world and send X-rays and other images for expert diagnoses. As a result, thousands of people who live in the Amazon now benefit from high-quality medical care.

In addition, the Abaré is using its mobile broadband connection to offer the Tapajós River communities educational training programs with the support of local universities.

In 2011, connectivity was extended to the community of Suruacá, and Connect To Learn, Ericsson's program that brings cloud-based education to secondary schools, was launched.

Françoise Trapenard, president of Telefonica Vivo Foundation, said: "The region, until signal arrival of Vivo, lived the challenges of isolation imposed by the geography of the Amazon region, is now a place for people connected. The original motivation of this project had a focus on education and health in order to provide, through new connectivity technologies, learning opportunities for young riparian and streamline the activities of medical care to the population carried aboard the hospital ship Abaré."

Caetano Scannavino, Coordinator and Founder of Saúde Alegria, said: "Most of the world thinks that the Amazon is just the jungle, with trees and rivers - that it's like a vacuum. But the Brazilian Amazon is 25 million people. My dream is that all communities in the whole of the Amazon can be connected because the world should know the ability, the beauty, and the intelligence of these people."

Elaine Weidman-Grunewald, Head of Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility, Ericsson, says: "We're honored that the GSMA has recognized our efforts but even more honored to have been part of something as powerful as Amazon Connection. This is what technology for good is all about."

Recognizing the important social benefits of the hospital boat initiative, the Brazilian government has initiated a program to launch 100 additional hospital boats. Funding for 32 of them has already been approved, ensuring they will be operational in the near future.

NOTES TO EDITORS

Technology for Good
www.ericsson.com/networkedsociety/technology-for-good/

Global Mobile Awards
http://www.globalmobileawards.com/

Flickr collection about Amazon Connection
www.flickr.com/ericsson_images

Download high-resolution photos and broadcast-quality video at www.ericsson.com/press

Ericsson is the world's leading provider of communications technology and services.
WCDMA/HSPA enables hundreds of millions of people to access mobile broadband (MBB) through their smartphones every day as part of their daily lives. Today, new, low-priced WCDMA/HSPA smartphones are entering the market, and they will enable MBB for new hundreds-of-million-sized markets.

The mobile broadband (MBB) market has reached a turning point and is about to enter a phase of massive growth that is forecast to see subscriber numbers more than quadruple from 1.5 billion at the end of 2012 to about 6.5 billion by the end of 2018.

At the core of this surge in MBB uptake is the arrival of low-cost WCDMA/HSPA smartphones that will do for MBB what affordable GSM phones did for mobile telephony.

At the same time, there is a considerable focus on LTE, due to the high bitrates it provides and the fast pace of its successful rollout programs. Many operators are asking themselves what the right HSPA and LTE mix is for their networks.

Regardless of which technology we use, WCDMA/HSPA or LTE, serving this new MBB mass market demands a network that can deliver the right coverage, capacity, performance and business models on a global scale. WCDMA/HSPA networks are central to meeting these requirements today and – through their continuing enhancement – will be for the foreseeable future.

A holistic methodology is necessary for assessing the potential reductions of CO2e emissions. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a well-established method and can be used for comparing emissions created in different scenarios.

To prevent climate change from severely impacting almost every facet of life in the world, scientific consensus points to a need to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases by as much as 80 percent by 2050. To achieve this we must replace traditional methods, processes and systems with smarter, more efficient ones. And broadband constitutes the foundation of a resource-efficient infrastructure that can deliver services in a low-carbon way.

To support this transition to a low-carbon Networked Society, it is necessary to understand the extent to which new solutions will reduce CO2e emissions. A holistic methodology of quantifying emissions helps us to understand the complexity of large industrial systems and user behaviors, and ultimately for assessing the potential reductions of emissions. The life cycle assessment (LCA) constitutes a well-established methodology and is especially useful for evaluating the potential of ICT solutions to reduce emissions in sectors not traditionally associated with ICT.

The adoption of holistic LCA methodologies as standardized by ETSI, ITU-T and ISO:

enables companies to prioritize between ICT solutions based on their impact on sustainability

enables and guides policy makers to support balanced decisions regarding sustainability

provides a means of making comparisons between ICT-based solutions and other kinds of solutions

helps to place the focus on the total level of energy usage and to highlight the potential for CO2e reductions in business cases, thereby encouraging investment in ICT.

LTE Broadcast offers mobile-network operators a profitable business proposition through service differentiation, new revenue opportunities, and more efficient distribution of live and other digital media.

The proliferation of mobile devices, mobile content and 4G LTE networks has led to a boom in mobile-video and digital media usage. Managing the growth of mobile-network traffic has created a significant challenge for mobile network operators (MNOs), which need to optimize their networks to accommodate the increase in demand.

This paper explores the revenue opportunities and cost benefits MNOs can realize through the implementation of LTE Broadcast, a mobile broadcast solution that complements LTE networks.

LTE Broadcast delivers the same content to multiple users with the capability to support a virtually unlimited number of users simultaneously, thereby ensuring a high-quality video experience and enabling new revenue opportunities for MNOs.

Using LTE Broadcast, MNOs and their media partners can monetize premium content over mobile networks without the fear of network congestion and delivery failure to their customers.

In addition, LTE Broadcast allows MNOs to manage their networks better – especially mobile-video-related traffic – through the very efficient use of spectrum and network investments.

Ericsson together with 25 partners have developed mechanisms and protocols for Information Centric Networks (ICN) that help to manage the heavy workload of transferring media information more efficiently than today’s networks in EU-funded project SAIL.

EFRAIM and other research projects will benefit from this work and continue to further detail the future solutions for media distribution – their business models and customer satisfaction are two key elements of these solutions.

SAIL has been part of the creation of the ICN Research Group (ICN-RG) within the research part of the standards organization IETF, as ICN is close to possible first deployment.

How will users access media in the future? And what factors will affect the performance of media distribution?

The EU-funded project SAIL, Scalable and Adaptive Internet Solutions, has helped to evolve the current network to better fit tomorrow’s needs. The project is led by Ericsson, and involves 25 leading telecommunications players from Europe, Australia and Israel. It is funded by the European Commission’s seventh framework program (FP7), started in August 2010, and ends February 2013.

Users accessing information and applications are mobile and they expect their computing environment to follow them. The project solutions will ensure that the user’s favorite applications are responsive and perceived as being available at "arm’s length" – no matter where they are in the world. The NetInf system for Information Centric Networking has been used in SAIL as a research platform to enable users to address content directly, rather than addressing servers to get the closest copy. This is being demonstrated at the event ‘Future media distribution using Information Centric Networks’ in Stockholm 13th February.

SAIL has also presented Cloud Networking as a concept to automatically establish and manage distributed cloud resources (computation, storage and networking) within and across providers’ domains, making it possible for operators to be part of interconnected clouds across the internet.

SAIL partners have been involved in the creation of the ICN Research Group (ICN-RG). ICN-RG is part of the Internet Research Task Force, IRTF which is a parallel organization to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), that develops and promotes Internet standards.

EFRAIM is a national Swedish project, funded by VINNOVA, Sweden’s innovation agency. The purpose of the project is to identify and develop distributed network solutions for media distribution. The solutions should be robust, scalable, cost efficient and above all energy efficient. The consortium includes content owners, producers, distributors, vendors, operators and researchers. The mix of partners in the project will ensure that the identified solutions will be technically relevant and commercially attractive.

Existing and newly-developed solutions will be analyzed in detail regarding total energy consumption for the media delivery, user behaviors and experienced quality.

Partners, SAIL: Ericsson (Sweden), Alcatel-Lucent (Germany), Nokia Siemens Networks (Finland), NEC Europe (Germany), France Telecom (France), Telefónica Research and Development (Spain), Telecom Italia (Italy), Portugal Telecom Inovação, (Portugal), SICS (Sweden), IST-UTL (Portugal), University of Paderborn (Germany), Aalto University (Finland), KTH (Sweden), Fraunhofer AISEC (Germany), University of Bremen, (Germany), Hewlett-Packard (UK), Fundacion Robotiker (Spain), Institut Telecom (France), Technion, (Israel), DOCOMO Eurolabs (Germany), Inria (France), Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), NICTA (Australia), Universidad de Cantabria (Spain), Lyatiss (France).

Partners, EFRAIM: Acreo, SICS, LTH, Ericsson, SVT, TV4, TeliaSonera, Spotify, Qbrick and Peerialism. (All from Sweden).

As connected devices become increasingly common in our homes, new, more personalized ways of consuming media will become an important source of revenue for our customers.

With enhancements to the delivery of cloud and video-on-demand services, our customers now have the opportunity to improve quality of experience for consumers while tailoring their services for specific applications and devices. Ericsson recently announced a new Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) which uses existing copper and fiber-access infrastructure to provide high-quality, personalized broadband services, specifically for smart homes.

Gabriel Brown, a senior analyst at Heavy Reading, says: “With the ever greater diversity of media, content, and communications being consumed in the home, operators should be able to profit from improved service-delivery capabilities. Service differentiation over high-bandwidth residential connections has great commercial potential. For example, ensuring that the performance needs of a new real-time application are met, or optimizing delivery of media for a variety of device types, are both monetization opportunities.”

Enhancing the delivery of cloud and video-on-demand services to different device types is a top design priority in the new BNG, which runs on the Smart Service Router (SSR) 8000 family of products. Personalization of service delivery is a natural evolution of today’s high-speed internet services and is increasingly viewed as an important revenue-generating capability by operators.

Türk Telekom, a leading tier-1 operator which operates a large Ericsson Broadband Remote Access Server farm, has said that it is interested in testing the new BNG capabilities: “We are currently testing the SSR 8020’s routing capabilities and are very happy with the results. We shall begin testing the BNG functionality on the SSR 8020 in the very near future.”

Ericsson introduced the industry’s first Subscriber Management Service (SMS) platform about 15 years ago and has since then been at the forefront of technology innovation and commercial leadership in this area.
