Our high capacity SGSN-MME includes a wide range of customer requested features and has achieved excellent in-service performance (ISP) figures during high-traffic conditions.

The SGSN-MME includes SGSN functionality for GSM and WCDMA access and Mobility Management Entity (MME) functionality for LTE and Evolved Packet Core (EPC). The EPC network architecture can be implemented through software upgrades of installed SGSN nodes, which means that previous investments in GSM/WCDMA are protected.

We have unparalleled experience from the deployment and operations of commercial LTE/EPC networks. We launched the world's first commercial LTE/EPC network in Europe and the world's largest network in the US. We have also built and are operating a large number of commercial LTE/EPC networks across the globe, all including the SGSN-MME.

Key features

The SGSN-MME provides packet-data switching and mobility/session management in GSM, WCDMA and LTE networks. It has excellent, proven ISP and extensive functionality, which optimizes network operation and minimizes total cost of ownership.

The SGSN is upgraded to an SGSN-MME mobility server for Evolved Packet Core networks by a smooth software upgrade. The SGSN-MME supports triple 3GPP access, GSM, WCDMA and LTE and can be included in an SGSN-MME Pool. 

Building on the proven software and functionality, the new SGSN-MME MkX platform on Ericsson Blade System extends the capabilities to meet even the most aggressive growth predictions. It offers superior scalability that supports 36 million users per node and up to 2300 million users when deployed in a pooled configuration. With the high capacity, scalability, small footprint (0.24 square meters) and low power consumption of our SGSN-MME, you can optimize the operation and manage the increasing volume of traffic from mobile broadband. The SGSN-MME is continually developed to incorporate new features, contributing to reduce costs and increase revenue.

Ericsson’s virtual SGSN-MME is an evolution of the SGSN-MME for native networks. This means that it has full functionality parity and can perfectly well interwork with the native network – which is a must, particularly during the transition phase from native to cloud/virtualized environments. It provides full SW/HW decoupling which enables 3:rd party HW support. Furthermore, it is fully based on Open source standards and forms an integral part of Ericsson Virtual EPC and Cloud system. The software is the same for native or virtualized applications. This secures functionality parity, short time-to-market for new features, high reliability and efficient maintenance procedures.

We were the first company to make the evolution toward a flat IP-based network architecture. In April 2008, we implemented the feature 3G Direct Tunnel in a commercial network. 3G Direct Tunnel allows data traffic to bypass the SGSN-MME, significantly increasing network capacity and allowing the SGSN to function as an MME signaling server. Today it is the world's most widely deployed SGSN/MME.

Bouygues Telecom, France - A big surprise

Bouygues Telecom chose to change its nodes in favor of Ericsson SGSN-MME with multi-access technology. Optimization and control of smartphone signaling was introduced as part of the solution, resulting in a 98 percent reduction in paging.
