Radio Access Network
Building profitable radio networks

Ericsson's portfolio of Radio Access Network products enables operators to build highly-profitable radio networks based on the system families GSM/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA and LTE. These are the dominant technologies to offer high-quality voice and data services with the economies of scale to build, operate and manage the most cost-effective networks.

GSM/EDGE
(Global System for Mobile communications / Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution)

GSM is the most widely adopted mobile standard in the world.

Ericsson is the number one supplier of GSM systems in the world and was the founder of the GSM community. About half of all GSM calls made anywhere in the world are connected through an Ericsson system.

EDGE delivers broadband-like data speeds to mobile devices. It allows consumers to connect to the Internet and send and receive data, including digital images, web pages and photographs, much faster than possible with an ordinary GSM/GPRS network.

EDGE enables GSM operators to offer higher speed mobile-data access, serve more mobile-data customers and to free up GSM network capacity to accommodate additional voice traffic. As the leading vendor to supply commercial EDGE infrastructure, Ericsson offers operators a unique combination of market expertise and cutting-"EDGE" technology.

WCDMA/HSPA
(Wideband Code Division Multiple Access / High Speed Packet Access)
WCDMA/HSPA is the world's leading 3G technology.

WCDMA/HSPA is a very cost efficient solution for voice traffic and also the best technology delivering the capacity and the efficiency to power mass market mobile broadband services including video and multimedia communications, mobile TV, streaming and fast download of music videos, sports and news clips and, for enterprises, fast access to the corporate LAN.

WCDMA/HSPA is part of Ericsson's Full Service Broadband offering and gives operators revenue opportunities by offering mobile broadband access with similar performance as over most fixed networks.

After its strong start, HSPA is undergoing a strong evolution to even higher speeds, more capacity and lower latency. HSPA evolution will further strengthen the end-user experience of mobile broadband with the introduction of smart antennas and higher-order modulation technologies.

LTE (Long Term Evolution)
LTE is the next evolutionary 3GPP technology step. It offers high peak speeds, low latency, high capacity, spectrum flexibility and network simplicity.

Leveraging on its unrivaled experience with mobile systems, Ericsson is leading the introduction of LTE. The first commercial LTE release from Ericsson will be available in 2009.

UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access)
Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) is an industry standard to access GSM services (voice and data) over broadband. The services are delivered from the mobile core network over any IP broadband connection and into the mobile phone via unlicensed radio (WiFi). The UMA solution is a 3GPP standard and named Generic Access Network (GAN). Ericsson's solution for supporting UMA/GAN is called Mobile@Home.
