The recently unveiled U380 platform will be making a big impact on the growing demand for HSPA smartphones - where consumers are looking for the true mobile internet experience and powerful features in a highly compact design.
U380 represents the first in a series of Open Operating System collaborations between Ericsson Mobile Platforms and Texas Instruments. By integrating Ericsson's HSPA modem with TI's high-performance OMAP3430 applications processor into a single-chip solution, the result is one of the most powerful and compact multimedia platforms on the market in this category.
"With our recently-announced U380, you can really do thin form factors - just because you have Open OS on your phone, doesn't mean that your pockets get larger," says Mikael Jönsson, senior product manager at Ericsson Mobile Platforms. "In this highly integrated solution, we've combined the wireless engine and the application into one core component."
Due to be introduced to the market in early 2009, the U380 will enable handset manufacturers and mobile operators to differentiate their products through rich, easy-to-use and customizable user interfaces. And it will offer support for a host of multimedia possibilities, such as camcorder with DVD quality, high resolution camera, and mobile TV.
"U380 provides great opportunities for device manufacturers worldwide," says Jönsson.
