LTE, a standard defined by the 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) is widely seen as the next step in the evolution of the user experience, with its ability to improve latency, capacity and throughput. It will enable enhanced applications such as mobile video and rich multimedia telephony while interoperating with existing cellular systems.
"We achieved complete technology leadership by having a very early start with LTE," says Moeller, "Before the prototype project, we spent several years of concentrated research on the LTE algorithm and concept – we also benefited from having a very dedicated and determined development team."
The development team had been working for more than a year to bring their solution to a state of readiness for demonstration at Barcelona. Ericsson Mobile Platforms is working to be the most innovative supplier of LTE solutions on the market with its first software-defined access architecture.
"We have been the only ones who presented the full LTE chain in a small device with applications on it, and we have been the only team to demonstrate user scenarios at CeBit and Barcelona, together with the test bed and the core network. We had a fully-integrated demo system to 3GPP March 07 standard compliant, up and running," says Moeller.
More than 100 LTE demonstrations at Barcelona were made for customers and operators. Additional customer audits of the EMP LTE development Program have also been completed.
