Voice and multimedia meet in real time

March 2, 2004

Don't just talk - take a photo and send a picture while you chat. Ericsson has made this possible and demonstrated its new weShare solution at the 3GSM Congress in Cannes.

Picture messaging and video services are predicted to have the greatest growth rate in the near future. To further boost multimedia services and speed up their use, Ericsson has developed weShare, a combination of services. The solution enables an end user to instantly share media with the person they are talking to.

Kjell Forsberg, who works with IP multimedia at Ericsson, says: "Today people mainly use voice services and are very familiar with them. If we then incorporate multimedia services that can be used while talking, the transition to new mobile multimedia services will be smoother and quicker."

WeShare Image is a person-to-person service that makes it possible to take a photo while talking with a friend and, at the push of a button, share the photo with the friend while still talking. It is also possible to show what you are looking at while talking with someone using weShare Motion.

Studies conducted at Ericsson ConsumerLab in the UK show that these services are popular and will stimulate growth for services such as voice and picture messaging.

"With weShare we can show that it is possible to combine different solutions and media, thereby providing mobile multimedia services based on existing consumer behavior and desires."

Ericsson has built the weShare solution on its IPMM system, which enables voice and multimedia services to work simultaneously in real time and non-real time. Another solution enabled by the IPMM system is Ericsson Instant Talk.

"During 2004, Ericsson will continue to work with operators and the industry to further develop the weShare solution," Forsberg says. "An IP Multimedia Subsystem (IPMM) trial agreement was signed with operator 3 in Italy in October 2003."

With further development it will also be possible to send and receive links to websites. WeShare could also become the natural choice for enterprises.

"For example," says Forsberg, "a helpdesk could be able to take over your phone and help you solve a problem. If you are lost or can't find a particular store or company, you could have a map sent to your phone while still talking with someone on the other end."
