Ericsson Expander tackles high growth markets

April 28, 2004

Ericsson Expander is a package of solutions for operators who are interested in pursuing today's high growth markets such as remote and rural regions as well as emerging markets.

Investing in new infrastructure is usually costly and investing in regions where the average users income is lower than in developed markets adds risk to the investment. But Ericsson Expander removes the risk through its cost-efficient solutions.

Peter Michelson, Manager at Business Unit Access Marketing says: "We're concentrating on reducing the total cost of ownership for the operator. We will reduce the overall cost of building and running the network while maintaining a high service quality."

The next billion users are likely to come from two areas, urban and suburban areas where coverage may already exist and rural areas where traffic demand is unknown.

For urban areas where coverage exists, operators are seeking even more subscribers but in these areas, there's a limit to the amount of radio spectrum available. Ericsson has added new features to the Base Station Subsystem (BSS) to meet this challenge. The new features squeeze more traffic from a limited radio spectrum by optimizing the networks, cell and channel capacity. It means more carriers can be inserted into the radio network without jeopardizing radio quality.

In rural areas, operators have been reluctant to invest because they risk not getting a return on their investment. Ericsson has therefore developed an efficient radio solution that minimizes the total number of radio base station sites required.

"Operators often think that they’re better off investing in 'low-priced' equipment to minimize their risk in rural areas," says Michelson. "But in fact, the opposite is true. Our advanced radio solutions reduce the number of radio sites needed and also reduce operation and maintenance requirements while paving the way for the possibilities of future expansion.

"By reducing the number of base station sites, we can reduce an operators capital and operating expenditure by 30 percent," says Michelson.

Ericsson is now looking at a total solution under the Expander umbrella. So far, there is a GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network (RAN) and CDMA2000 RAN offering, but work is underway to launch Expander solutions for the total mobile offering including core network, transmission, service layer solutions, integration and managed capacity.
