More complexity, but less cost - OSS makes it possible

Being able to cope with the increasing complexity of networks without drowning in costs is a big issue for mobile operators today. Ericsson's Operations Support System has proven to be a good investment both to gain control of networks and cut costs.

The costs for network operations and maintenance have increased dramatically since 2000. Today, as much as 80 percent of an operators' costs can be operational expenditure on such areas as maintenance and transmission.

 

One explanation for this is that networks have become increasingly complex, not the least because of the introduction of 3G. Also, the number of components in the network has grown tremendously and new mobile systems and services need to co-exist seamlessly with 2G and legacy systems.

 

It is in these areas where operators could save a lot of money, gain better control and optimize the outcome of their network investments. This is why Ericsson has developed OSS – a single operations support tool that manages the three different mobile networks.

 

Peter Sandberg, responsible for OSS sales and marketing, says: "It offers one seamless interface to the three main types of networks: the core network, 2G and 3G radio networks."

 

In the past, an operator could buy a network from one vendor, then pick tools and support from another. But that has become increasingly expensive, and niche suppliers have had big problems keeping up to date.

 

The market turnover for operations and maintenance systems is now about USD 2 billion dollars. The strategy to build and configure maintenance tools in-house proved to be very expensive.

 

"One big customer recently made a complete u-turn, throwing out their handmade solution, and using Ericsson's instead," Sandberg says. "Before, they had their own systems integration department."

 

With Ericsson OSS, the operator is assured every new release in the network also releases updates of the maintenance tool, cutting heavy costs in systems integration. Ericsson has all the telecom competence needed to integrate new and old systems, and knows how to cope with changes and technology shifts.

 

Per-Erik Gustafsson, strategic product manager says the tool puts the operator’s most important tasks in focus. "It enables the operator to centrally monitor and configure, giving them time to optimize their network. It gives the operator the control of usage and the quality of delivered services." Sandberg says Ericsson's Operations Support System acts as " the operator's eyes" when it come to what is going on in the network. "The operator gets control and can focus on following-up the services."

 

Ericsson's OSS can also offer real time performance data straight from the mobile network which gives the operator an instant indication of quality problems or congestion as it happens.

 

Another feature within OSS is Service Management, that can be used for making analysis and prognosis of services, not only for traditional network Management, but more important the operators customer business process.

 

As networks increasingly become more complex, Ericsson's OSS solution enables operators to gain better control of their networks and reduce costs. Operators can optimize network performance and minimize the time it takes to solve performance problems.
