Broadband growing in Brazil and Indonesia
Incumbent operators PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia and Brasil Telecom have both chosen to invest in Ethernet Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) solutions from Ericsson. These large break-in contracts for two such important markets prove that Ericsson's purpose-built IP-Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs) are fast gaining ground over upgrades of legacy DSLAMs.
Utilizing the traditional copper wire of the access network, Ericsson's Ethernet DSL Access solution radically alters the economics of rolling out DSL. Through connecting directly to an Ethernet aggregation network, Ericsson's solution supports high bandwidth services while simultaneously reducing transport costs. This secures operators' ability to compete in terms of both price and bandwidth.

PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia's new solution will enable it to build an advanced IP/Ethernet network for delivering voice, data and video in Surabaya, East Java; the second largest city in Indonesia. The contract, which in fact goes beyond the supply of IP-DSLAMs to include an aggregation network and Broadband Remote Access Servers, makes Ericsson the first vendor to roll-out an IP/Ethernet DSL network in Indonesia.

PT Telkom has announced an ambitious plan to roll out many more DSL solutions, which is expected to encourage the adoption of broadband in Indonesia. The company will tender for 1.8 million new broadband lines starting in 2004, emphasizing IP-based solutions such as Ericsson's Ethernet DSL Access.

In Brazil, the ADSL-dominated broadband market is still in an early phase of development, with only 1.9 percent penetration in 2003. But this figure is expected to reach 4.9 percent in 2007, along with a government plan for countrywide expansion of the wireline network.

Brasil Telecom will target its Ericsson IP/Ethernet solution at residential and business users in Brasília, Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. By upgrading existing telephone lines with Ethernet DSL technology, the company will be able to offer customers in these areas high-speed internet access and new types of broadband services.

Ericsson's Ethernet DSL Access solution is now the most widely-deployed IP/Ethernet DSLAM on the market. To date Ericsson has entered into more than 60 IP-DSLAM contracts, including deals with China Telecom (China), Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (India), TeliaSonera (Sweden and Finland), iiNET (Australia) and B2 (Sweden).
