Operators urged to make connection
Spanish operator Amena launched its commercial 3G handsets and services at the end of October. With the widest range of services in the Spanish market today, the expansion of its 3G network is the next priority.
Alberto Calero, director of new services at Amena, says the launch has been well received by subscribers. "Our 3G launch was a very important event for us because we have been working very hard to be able to provide our clients with the widest range of services on the market," Calero says.

More than 82 services are offered within the 3G framework, with one of the most attractive ones being the ability to have video conversations between two camera mobiles or through a camera mobile and a PC with webcam. And for those heavily addicted to football, "La Liga" can be followed on the mobile screen.

Calero says residential clients especially are showing great interest in video-related services; for example video conversations, video messages and streaming. "The end user, whether a private or business client, gains clear benefits from 3G: higher speed, better capacity and improved image and sound quality," he says.

"Companies are especially attracted to high-speed data transmission, which makes internet, e-mail and corporate intranet easily accessible through mobiles."

As Spanish subscribers gradually get used to the possibilities of 3G, Amena keep on expanding the coverage of their 3G network. Amena has invested EUR 120 million and, by the end of this year, 33 percent of Spaniards will be covered, including 25 of Spain's largest cities. At the end of 2006, 91 percent of the population will be covered. On a five-year basis, Amena expect to invest EUR 1 billion in 3G.

Ericsson has a close relationship with Amena and is the main supplier to its GSM/GPRS network and supplies also an important part of the WCDMA radio access network. Ericsson is also responsible of the complete network's first line maintenance and the sole core network supplier of both Amena’s circuit-switching and packet-switching.
