Mobile softswitch cuts costs

Today, an increasing number of operators are choosing to lower capital expenditure and daily costs by introducing mobile softswitches. Having performed more of these implementations than any other vendor, Ericsson is showing the field the way forward.

Ericsson Mobile Softswitch Solutions have been shown to reduce operators' core network operating expenditure by as much as 50 percent. This is achieved by separating the control and transport units allowing traffic to travel through a network by the shortest path and most efficient coding. By enabling local switching, Ericsson Mobile Softswitch renders less traffic through the core and produces savings in terms of rent, power and maintenance costs.

Ericsson Marketing Manager Rohan Dias says operators at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes are showing great interest in Ericsson Mobile Softswitch Solutions and their cost-cutting ability. "They are really impressed when they see that with its softswitch Ericsson can improve the efficiency of their core network, from today," he says. "By installing our mobile softswitch in GSM networks we are really doing something for operators that affects their cost structure and paves the way for IMS."

As well as facilitating cost savings and protecting existing investments, separating the control and connectivity functions is a vital step towards an all-IP network. By implementing mobile softswitches operators are able to achieve convergence between the circuit-switched and packet-switched components of their networks; a necessity for smooth evolution to all-IP.

Ericsson is a clear leader in the mobile softswitch domain, having performed more of these implementations than any other vendor. Ericsson started deploying softswitch solutions for fixed networks in 1998, and began mobile implementations in 2003. Today it can boast over 50 mobile softswitch installations, including 18 live commercial mobile networks.

Dias says Ericsson has been able to achieve this position through building close relationships with its customers. "They have allowed us to trial solutions at an early stage," he says. "From their feedback Ericsson has been able to formulate mobile softswitches that fit in with what operators are doing and will meet their needs both today and into the future."
