Ericsson's IMS strategy pays off
3G services require powerful networks to ensure best use of bandwidth and radio resources. Let's look at why power is so important – and how to use it smartly.
The official announcement of Spanish operator Telefónica as Ericsson's first wireline IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) customer was a major positive for the group, industry analysts Current Analysis have reported.

"The major positive of the announcement is that Ericsson can now claim to be among the first equipment vendors to supply a fixed-line IMS solution – which includes session control layer equipment – to a major carrier," Current Analysis reports.

The analyst firm says Ericsson's announcement was all about timing because the company needed to back up its claims of having more than 25 IMS-related deployments. Also, the deployment at Telefónica confirms IMS is as interesting to wireline networks as it is to mobile ones.

The IMS deployment will allow Telefónica to offer IP telephony to it customers. And for business users, it will offer services such as video telephony, conference calling, sharing of documents and web pages, and support for remote workers through IP Centrex. Telefónica plans to start the implementation process during the first half of 2005 – suggesting a rollout of commercial services by the end of 2005 – meaning Ericsson might win the IMS race.
