Turbo-boosting broadband
Making the triple play of video, data and voice services through an IP network a reality requires greater broadband width. ADSL2+ makes broadband pipes fatter and faster.

In the UK, cable and internet service provider (ISP) NTL partnered with Ericsson to test the ability of ADSL2+ to provide triple-play services to consumers. Steve Doe, Ericsson UK chief technical officer, says: "Trial participants were getting speeds in excess of 18Mbps. This kind of speed is more than sufficient for triple play and is even good enough for high-definition television (HDTV). We were able to deliver ultra-high-speed internet services and HDTV via the IP stream."

ADSL2+, which employs Ericsson's EDA IP DSLAM, works on copper-based networks and facilitates large amounts of bandwidth to consumers. Doe says: "For the trial we modified our ADSL2+ product to fit into NTL's existing street cabinets. At present, NTL is evaluating the results of the trial and looking at deployment options."

Ian Bull, account manager, adds: "This was the first trial of its kind in the UK for ADSL2+. The product performed well and NTL was delighted with the results."

For ISPs looking to offer triple play, ADSL2+ provides the means to get the most out of existing networks. Using Ericsson's EDA IP DSLAM within ADSL2+ solutions means ISPs get a scalable, future-proof and cost-efficient technology for delivering IP-based services to consumers. Doe says: "ADSL2+ is the new standard for ISPs in the UK."

As a world leader in telephony technology and with its IP-based EDA DSLAM, Ericsson is expanding the capabilities for traditional copper-based networks.
