Building codes, power consumption and the legalities of property acquisition are not your typical telecom issues, but operators will have to face them when expanding or building new network sites.
To keep costs down and maintain capacity at an optimal level, you need one partner who can deliver a complete solution for site development.

"It takes a very long time to do search and design for a complete network site," says Anna Öhrner, business solution manager for Site Development.
"Ericsson can help operators improve the time it takes developing a site even before a decision on the telecom vendor has been made."
To develop a site and get a network up and running, it is necessary to have a detailed understanding of such diverse issues as the relevant building codes and regulations in a particular country, and the sourcing of services, construction and materials suppliers. This needs to be done for each and every site in the network - something that becomes extremely complex in networks with thousands of sites.
"To have control over a large number of sites requires good project management skills; something which Ericsson has," Öhrner says. "Together with our extensive telecom knowledge, we can optimize sites to have the required quality and capacity."
Operators are looking at ways to optimize their networks, including reductions in capex, as well as operational and maintenance costs. There are many variables which can be optimized such as power consumption, climate control, design, and capacity.
Optimizing performance
In the past, it was necessary to deal with a host of different service companies, such as construction companies and equipment vendors. The optimal solution, however, is when one service provider takes full responsibility for all aspects of developing sites in the network, including optimizing performance and managing capacity.
Site development can be a resource-intense undertaking and most operators, regardless of whether they are new or an established service provider, are keen to avoid increasing the size of their organization. Furthermore, site development activities such as site acquisition and legal administration are clearly outside a telecom operators' core business. Handing over these responsibilities is one way to help operators focus on more critical business issues.
Ericsson has the extensive experience and knowledge of building networks that other service providers cannot provide. "In North America, we were able to help Cingular with the nationwide merger of their two networks (Cingular and AWS). At the same we were helping them to build out and migrate different systems, including GSM and WCDMA as well as the removal of TDMA systems," Öhrner says. "We even helped them to launch an HSDPA solution." This experience is something that Ericsson has been able to apply to different customers around the world. Ericsson is currently performing Site development services in Bangladesh, Indonesia and in the Netherlands.
Site development is one way in which Ericsson is positioning itself as a prime integrator in the industry. Site development can also be a part of managed-service solutions, where Ericsson takes responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the network. All of these solutions are centered around helping operators focus on their core business and on their customers' needs.
