VDSL2 winner all round

Although Ericsson's EDA 1200 solution for VDSL2 was awarded best access technology at the Broadband World Forum 2006, operators are the true winners.

VDSL2 (Very-High-Bit-Rate Digital Subscriber Line 2) is an International Telecommunication Union recommendation that allows operators to compete with cable and satellite providers for digital TV distribution. With VDSL2, they can offer services such as high-definition TV (HDTV), video-on-demand, high-speed internet access, and voice services such as VoIP, over standard copper telephone cables.

Ericsson's High-Performance EDA solution, EDA 1200, launched earlier this year, began with IP-DSLAM in 2001 and has developed to become a fiber-deep broadband access solution running over copper lines.

EDA 1200 allows operators to develop their businesses beyond basic IP connectivity, allowing them to offer any services to home and work environments in a way that is cost efficient and future proof.

Stig Persson, head of product management at Ericsson, says that EDA 1200 is the most scalable IP-DSLAM solution on the market. "These products are unique because they can be located locally and in a modular way," he says. EDA 1200 also operates under extreme temperature conditions, extending the market for where it can be deployed.

Growing competition in the market drives the need for all operators to differentiate their offerings. "Our EDA solutions provide operators with the ability to expand their customer bases by offering their users the best value in broadband services," Persson says.

Ericsson's EDA solutions have been designed to help fixed-line operators increase their broadband market share through unique multi-service capabilities. The concept of delivering any service, to any device, anywhere, is the foundation of Ericsson's Full-Service Broadband strategy, which was launched at the Broadband World Forum.

Ericsson's EDA 1200 is already the most widely deployed IP-DSLAM solution in the world, with more than 100 networks. The InfoVision award, from the International Engineering Consortium (IEC), conferred at the forum further confirms Ericsson's leadership in broadband access technology.
