Mobile TV breaks new ground

The second Mobile TV Screenings and Awards ceremony, held at the recent MIPCOM conference, showcased industry talent and creativity from around the globe, and a series of world firsts that have redefined the boundaries of mobile TV.

December 22, 2006

The MIPCOM Conference is a key forum for the TV and audio-visual content industry. Its pioneering Mobile TV Screenings and Awards were launched in 2005 and recognize excellence and originality in the mobile medium.

This year saw 290 entries from 34 countries - a 30 percent jump in submissions from 2005.

Mobile TV broke new ground with the launch of an interactive football talk-show and the world's first reality TV show that pays participants each time their clip is downloaded.

The overall winner and recipient of the Orange Grand Prize for Innovation was Soccer Addicts, an interactive weekly football talk-show that allows fans to provide their opinions using the video capability of their mobile phones.

Developed by Italian digital entertainment group Buongiorno for O2's 2.5G and 3G customers in the UK, the interactive video format creates a forum for fans, celebrities, and sports stars to interact, creating an audio-video mobile community of football fans.

Users can comment on recent matches, player performances, and club expectations by sending in video clips of their opinions via their mobile phones. Fans have the chance to see their clips sitting alongside video comments from their sporting idols and TV presenters.

3 UK also marked a world first with SeeMeTV, a service that pays customers for their video clips. Judged the Best Mobile Format for User-Generated Content, users can watch, provide or comment on clips, and contributors are paid about USD 0.02 each time their video is viewed.

SeeMeTV is billed as the ultimate reality TV show, providing opportunities for budding stars to upload their clips and potentially earn thousands of pounds. Since launching in October 2005, there have been more than 12 million downloads and 100,000 uploads to the service, generating more than USD 490,000 for contributors.

Forget the Rules, produced by Australian firm Global Dilemma, won Best Format for Interactive Mobile TV. The format is an interactive comedy drama series that follows three friends in their late twenties who share a house. The plot follows their individual struggles with romance, sex, drugs, and careers. Viewers control the story direction and can contribute content.

On This Day in History (OTHDIH) features 90-second vignettes of historical events for every day of the year. By leveraging the 700,000 hours of historic footage in its library, ITN On won the category for Best Repurposed Content from Existing Film or TV Property.
