Smartly moving broadband closer
Redback Networks’ SmartEdge 1200 multi-service edge router launch is a boost to Ericsson’s Full Service Broadband ambitions. By connecting fixed and wireless networks, Ericsson will enable a world where any network can deliver any service to any internet-enabled device.

SmartEdge 1200 is the first-million-subscriber router for triple-play services such as high-definition television, high-definition video-on-demand and mobile broadband, meaning that each SE1200 is capable of simultaneously handling one million subscribers (access requests). The SmartEdge 1200 is also compatible with the first two generations, SmartEdge 400 and SmartEdge 800.

Three major innovations are included in the SmartEdge 1200 platform: doubling capacity for new video upgrades, extending triple-play services to broadband mobile networks and integrating up to six network applications into a single router.

Ragnar Erkander, head of portfolio management at Ericsson Data Units says: "We estimate that the current global figure of about 250 million broadband users will increase dramatically to at least 1.5 billion by the end of 2011. As many as half of these will be mobile users.

"SmartEdge 1200's ability to facilitate multi-access is an important next step in that evolution, especially as households, in the future, will have multiple simultaneous access requests, each one the equivalent to a subscriber, open at the same time.

"The technological capabilities of SmartEdge, coupled with Ericsson's technological capabilities and our Full Service Broadband strategy, show just how much of a hand-in-glove match Ericsson and Redback are."

Kevin DeNuccio, Redback Networks President, says: "High-definition video and broadband mobility are driving one of the largest, multi-billion dollar routing markets in 10 years.

"We believe the core of the network will be upgraded, and the edge of the network will be the focus of most carrier spending in the future.

"SmartEdge 1200 will be at the center of most network upgrades, because Ericsson and Redback have unique expertise in both subscriber and service management."

Fifteen of the top 20 telephone carriers worldwide already use the SmartEdge router platform to deliver a mix of broadband, phone and TV services to more than 50 million subscribers.
