As a result of the collaboration, all handset makers will be able to offer advanced Open OS (Operating System standards for both the high-end and expanding mid-range 3G market.
The strategic technology engagement will create solutions combining Ericsson Mobile Platforms' (EMP) small and efficient 3G modems and Texas Instruments' (TI) high-performance OMAP application processors.
The combining of expertise and creation of a single platform will reduce development costs for handset makers and allow new models to be brought to market quicker.
Solution-based handsets are expected to be available on the market in the second half of 2008.
Robert Puskaric, head of Ericsson Mobile Platforms, says the partnership highlights Ericsson's commitment to develop and deliver innovative mobile platforms to meet the ever-changing requirements and demands of the device market.
He says the deal is the most significant in 20 years of collaboration between Ericsson and Texas Instruments Incorporated.
"Ericsson Mobile Platforms and Texas Instruments are both global leaders in our respective areas, so combining that expertise creates an extremely strong position," he says. "Collaboration in this technology area is a first for the industry and initial reaction from media, analysts and customers has been very positive.
"This deal is also securing EMP's position in being able to offer multimedia platforms across the scale - from very high-end to mid-end - for any Open OS available in the industry today."
