Russian operator launches 3G
A 3G/HSPA network deployment from Ericsson will allow Russia’s largest mobile operator, MTS, to offer high-speed mobile broadband.

The solution will support the 3G/HSPA deployment in the Mobile TeleSystems OJSV (MTS) network, as well as core and radio access network equipment, and network management system hardware and software. With the launch of this 3G network, MTS customers will be able to enjoy mobile TV, video calls and other innovative, next-generation multimedia services.

Bjorn Eisner, Ericsson's Vice President for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, says: "This contract is of great importance to us. It's our first 3G contract with MTS and our first in Russia, and makes Ericsson a leading 3G equipment supplier in Russia. And, of course, it solidifies our partnership with MTS, the leading mobile operator in Russia, paving the way for future success."

Together with its subsidiaries, MTS has more than 83 million subscribers and provides GSM services in Armenia, Belarus, Russia, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

Eisner says: "Today, we are very strong in 2G on the Russian telecom market and Ericsson does business with all the major fixed operators, as well as the top three mobile players: MTS, Beeline and Megafon. Mobile communications in Russia are developing rapidly and Ericsson is proud to supply solutions for all cellular standards: GSM, GPRS, EDGE and now WCDMA/HSPA."

The deal also includes such professional services as network deployment, system integration, operation, technical support and training. The commercial launch of the network is scheduled for the latter part of 2008.
