To maintain an edge in a competitive market, Cellcom, Israel’s leading 3G operator, required the best mobile TV solution from a trustworthy vendor.

Ericsson has been chosen to act as prime integrator for Cellcom's mobile TV rollout. Mats Bosrup, Ericsson's country manager in Israel, says the system integration and network adaptations will be made owing to: the solution quality, the richness of features and the companies' relationship.
He says: "Our mobile TV solution will improve the TV experience for Cellcom's subscribers. They'll be able to enjoy fast channel switching, video on demand, an electronic program guide to view TV schedules for different channels, and interactivity such as sending an SMS to vote or request information."
Bosrup says Israeli operators have made their infrastructure investments, now it's time to leverage these to deliver more content and services. "This is a mature market with over 100 percent penetration. Users are tech savvy and demanding, which puts pressure on operators and their vendors to provide competitive services and solutions. This is why Cellcom is offering mobile TV and why Ericsson was chosen to provide the solution. Only now are all the parts in place: networks that can accommodate transmission rates, handsets with screen sizes acceptable to consumers, and local content such as Israeli news, sports and music channels."
All three of Israel's 3G operators are Ericsson customers. But Tzacki Naim, key account manager for Cellcom at Ericsson, says it was Ericsson's relationship with Cellcom that helped clinch the deal. "We've had other projects with Cellcom in the past couple of years, such as delivering a UMTS radio network and swapping out another company's WAP gateway. They believe in our products and have a lot of trust in Ericsson in general."
The mobile TV solution should be implemented and available by the end of Q1, 2008.
