A new deal between Ericsson and French broadcaster TDF could mean far more than a collaboration within TV, according to Eric Troussard, key account manager at Ericsson, France.

On December 4, Ericsson signed an agreement with TDF to supply a MINI-LINK microware transmission solution. This will let TDF create a wireless multi-service network to support France's demand for more voice and data services.
Troussard says: "Many new TV channels are being launched in France and TDF will act as a broadcaster for all of them. These range from the different digital terrestrial channels to the local channels and, in the future, to mobile-TV content providers.
"The solution will also allow TDF to bring broadband-data services to rural areas."
As well as supporting TDF's TV and radio business, Troussard hopes the deal will enable Ericsson to assist in new areas that the company has so far not be able to address.
In terms of telecoms, TDF is a major European tower company, hosting operator equipment on 7800 sites. The company also rolls out and optimizes networks, and performs related maintenance and administration work.
"By combining Ericsson's expertise in solutions and TDF's sites, we could be a major player in providing end-to-end turnkey solutions," Troussard says.
Troussard also sees potential to further extend Ericsson's involvement with TDF's TV and radio business. "TDF is becoming a major player on the European market for TV broadcasting by extending its reach to other countries," he says. "This could give us more leverage in other markets by providing transmission solutions through them. We're already working with some TDF subsidiaries outside France, such as Digita in Finland and Axion in Spain."
Guy Roussel, president, Ericsson France, says: "This new agreement takes our relationship with TDF to a new level and confirms our position as a leading microwave transmission solutions provider in France. It will also help us address the government and public-safety sector, which needs new transmission networks. With TDF we are already responding to some leads and opportunities in this area."
Roussel says that winning the deal is not only a result of the good relationship between both companies' management teams, but also of TDF's belief in Ericsson's technology.
"TDF understands that Ericsson is a leader in mobile technology and solutions, and also sees that we have a strong services strategy," he says.
