The Rich Communication Suite initiative is led by operators, handset and telecom vendors who have joined in an effort to facilitate the mobile communication evolution.

The group presented early results of these efforts in a showcase - including a presentation and a live demonstration of the initial feature set - in Barcelona for a full auditorium.
Jörgen Lantto, Vice President, Portfolio Management and Technology says: "This initiative is an important step to improve user experience, making it easier to communicate in a richer way. With the experience we have from supporting operators to launch IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) services, we see that RCS will play an important role in introducing new attractive services in an interoperable environment."
Ericsson is a driving force behind Rich Communication Suite (RCS). Together with other companies involved, Ericsson is working to encourage the use of communication applications and services based on IMS technology. The initiative has so far defined a set of features originating from IMS standards and established implementation guidelines.
RCS is aimed primarily at helping operators meet the consumer demand for richer communication. This initiative will make the total process - from implementation to customer care - easier and less expensive for operators. Further, it attempts to align consumer needs with device and network capability.
Nils Torstensson, Head of SA Enriched Communication at Ericsson, says: "We were very encouraged by the positive reception of the RCS initiative in Barcelona. We feel that operators have a great opportunity to address the 'Digital Native' generation and its mobile phone-based community communication. This makes us even more excited about our RCS aligned offering, the Ericsson Multimedia Communication Suite (MCS), which we just launched at Barcelona."
With the Ericsson MCS, mobile operators will be able to offer their customers a suite of attractive services. Consumers will be able to access new and existing services from their address book - with an interface including rich presence functionality such as avatars, photos and personal free text. The solution also keeps track of friends and their applications so consumers will always see who is available for different applications.
Market surveys by Ericsson ConsumerLab show clear signs that communication services on the internet such as communities, blogs and instant messaging are also demanded in a mobile context. The study shows that enriched communication services like chat, sending files and presence on the mobile phone, are of great interest in the 15-25 age groups.
Other companies involved in the RCS initiative are Orange, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, TeliaSonera, Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Nokia Siemens.
