Broadband for sustainability

Ericsson will be chairing a panel session at the upcoming Broadband World Forum Europe in September to highlight the positive effect telecoms can have on the environment.

To be moderated by Elaine Weidman-Grunewald, head of Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility at Ericsson, the session will focus on discussing how the widespread deployment of broadband could play a crucial role in helping reduce global CO2 emissions.

“ICT represents merely 2 percent of global CO2 emissions but we believe that by promoting ICT based on broadband, it can help offset the remaining 98 percent of emissions from other industries,” Weidman-Grunewald says. “During the panel session we will cover a broad range of topics including energy efficiency, CO2 emissions and the potentially transformative role broadband can play in radically reducing emissions.”

During the last few years, the telecom industry has made concerted efforts to minimize the negative impact of its products and services on the environment. Focus has been on reducing power consumption and on introducing “green” fuels.

The panel session will address the concern expressed by some in the industry that telecom’s positive effect on the environment has been largely overlooked. This includes results from Life Cycle Assessment studies conducted on telecom networks that show telecom can be a low-carbon technology.

The Broadband World Forum is being held in Paris, France, from September 7 to 9.
