ATM
Asynchronous Transfer Mode

ATM is used as a technology for the broadband transmission of telecommunications signals. In asynchronous transfer mode, the information being transmitted is organized into cells. It is called "asynchronous" because the recurrence of cells containing information from an individual user is not necessarily periodic.

ATM provides considerable flexibility, because the capacity of an individual subscriber's switched connection adapts to current requirements.
