Traffic inspection for Visibility, Control and New Business opportunities

Allocating sufficient resources for premium services is a challenge for operators. The volume of traffic generated by file-sharing services and the growing popularity of such peer-to-peer applications makes traffic control, based on deep packet inspection and heuristic analysis, essential

Deep packet inspection and heuristic analysis does not only permit operators to make efficient use of network resources and secure quality-of-service for premium services. It also enables them to improve network security; reduce costs for terminating peer-to-peer traffic; evaluate subscriber preferences; form partnerships with third-party content providers; provide channels for targeted marketing; and charge for data services in a truly flexible way.

Solutions for deep packet inspection and heuristic analysis can be implemented in the core network or the access edge network. The functionality could be integrated with current network elements or be based on dedicated nodes.

The preferred solution depends on a large number of factors, and in some cases the best option might be a so-called hybrid (combined) solution. Since the operators’ business environment is constantly changing, flexibility is one of the most important requirements for a cost-efficient and future-proof solution.
