Wireless Networks for In-building Environments

In-building Solutions (IBS) enable the efficient usage of wireless-mobile applications inside buildings. To make this possible, sufficient coverage and capacity and good radio quality must be available in the buildings.

Mobile operators will cover most buildings from outdoor sites in their macro network, but there is a need to provide many buildings with extended radio coverage and capacity.

IBS are therefore proven methods for an operator to capture new traffic and new revenue streams. By providing IBS to offload the macro network, you can increase mobile traffic and attract additional subscribers thanks to the superior mobile-network quality and accessibility to mobile-internet applications that require high data rates and capacity.

The deployment and introduction of IBS into mobile networks is increasing as user demands for “everywhere coverage” are matched by mobile operators being able to offer improved services and increase their traffic revenues.

There are several different ways to implement IBS. Dedicated Radio Base Stations connected to Distributed Antenna Systems are commonly implemented solutions.

IBS can include cellular standards such as GSM, WCDMA, CDMA2000, and/or non-cellular standards such as Wireless LAN and Bluetooth.
