Efficient softswitching

Telecom operators face considerable and growing competition for their key service, telephony. Aggressive reduction of recurring costs is essential to maintain competitiveness, preserve margins, and secure future business. A large addressable cost for both mobile and fixed infrastructure relates to network operational expenditure (opex).

Telecom quality softswitching provides the means to address the core network running cost. It enables a fully secure and user-transparent migration of today’s network to an efficient, IP-based next-generation network. Central to this evolution is a full-featured softswitch architecture that enables operators to maintain their existing voice offerings and margins.

The centralized network control and distributed switching inherent in softswitch network design offers big savings in operation and maintenance (O&M) and transmission costs. Further opex cuts result from the closure of many of the existing switch sites, saving rental, power and staff costs.

With softswitching the core network opex per subscriber is reduced by 80 percent compared to an early TDM based monolithic core network.

Switching opex per subscriber will continue to be reduced. This is driven by economies of scale in growing networks, hardware modernization, node capacity upgrades and efficient site solutions.
