Benefits for community service providers
Mobile communication provides one of the most effective channels for community service providers to reach large numbers of people, regardless of their location. Services such as telemedicine, e-learning and e-governance are helping to improve the lives of people dramatically in developing communities. We are working in high-growth markets to launch the services that will make a difference in communities small and large.
- Telemedicine is making healthcare easily accessible to people in even the most remote parts of a country. People can now seek medical advice from trained professionals without traveling long distances.
- Mobile broadband is giving rural populations access to quality education through initiatives such as e-learning.
- Government administration improves greatly when effective IT services are used – enhancing efficiency, driving down communication costs and increasing transparency.
Mobile communication can be a powerful tool for change in a community thanks to its wide reach and simple interface.
One example of this is the Gramjyoti project, which brought mobile broadband to rural India. Thousands of people within the Gramjyoti project area were able to use mobile broadband applications.
We worked in partnership with Apollo Hospitals, Hand in Hand (a local NGO), Edurite, One97, CNN and Cartoon Network to deliver a range of services including telemedicine, e-education, e-governance, voice and video-call services, and live TV and entertainment.
The services made possible by mobile communications are wide-ranging, including the following examples:
Telemedicine
With mobile broadband villagers can receive remote check-ups by a doctor using a laptop inside an ambulance. This service is made possible thanks to a high-speed wireless network.
E-learning
Educators in rural areas can use e-learning opportunities to provide classroom content, anywhere, at any time and at substantially reduced costs.
In July 2007, we announced a project together with Stanford University to explore the use of mobile technologies in distance e-learning.
E-governance
In India’s Madhya Pradesh region, the government has launched a project to deliver mobile versions of its services to 60 million residents in remote areas. In 2007, the services introduced included online bill payment, taxes, land records, income certificates, loans, driving licenses, birth and death certificates, and various government entitlement programs.
With e-governance, public-sector services become more accountable, transparent and effective.
Our experience makes us the ideal partner when you want to use telecommunications to make a difference in your community.
