Telecom Expansion

Vision for telecom expansion

The rapid expansion of mobile communications around the world is central to bridging the digital divide. Our vision is that telecommunications will become an integrated and natural part of everyday life for the majority of the world's population, while contributing to social and economic development.
  • By 2013, the number of mobile subscriptions will have grown to approximately 6.5 billion.
  • Mobile communication will improve the lives of millions of people by opening up new opportunities for income generation, strengthening social networks and providing a modern, functioning infrastructure.
  • The expansion of telecommunications will create new business opportunities and sources of entrepreneurship while helping businesses to run more efficiently.
  • Governments, regulators and non-governmental organizations will actively work to increase digitalization using mobile telecoms infrastructure, a key enabler for boosting gross domestic product.
Vision for Telecom Expansion

By bridging the digital divide, telecommunications will make a difference around the world for individuals, entrepreneurs and entire economies. We believe that information and communication technology (ICT) will become an integrated and natural part of everyday life for the world’s population, and a big contributor to sustainable development.

Few industries have experienced such rapid growth and development as the telecoms sector. With extraordinary subscriber growth expected in emerging markets, more people will soon enjoy the benefits of modern communication.

We have seen this vision become a reality through our work with the Millennium Villages initiative, in partnership with the Earth Institute at Columbia University, the United Nations Development Program, Sony Ericsson, Millennium Promise and regional African operators, such as MTN and Zain.

The Millennium Villages project uses mobile communication and the internet to help rural African communities grow and prosper by tackling challenges related to agriculture, health, education, infrastructure, gender equality, business development and other vital issues.
