Worldwide, some 43 million people have been forcibly displaced according to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR). As a result, separated families undergo considerable difficulties reconnecting with each other.
In 2008, two Danish brothers and social entrepreneurs David and Christopher Mikkelsen formed Refugees United. Beginning as an anonymous online search engine, the importance of a mobile option was soon realized.
Refugees United, together with Ericsson, the UNHCR and operator MTN joined forces to develop and deploy a mobile phone application that lets refugees register and search for loved ones. The service was piloted in Uganda with strong results. By mid-2011, there were close to 50,000 refugees registered on this platform, and the ambition is to register 120,000 by the end of the year.
Refugees United has one clear mission: ‘Reconnect refugees with their families, no matter where in the world’. By using new technology to broaden access to a tool that empowers refugees to connect themselves.

Danish brothers and social entrepreneurs David and Christopher Mikkelsen formed the non-profit Refugees United after spending years helping an Afghan refugee find his family.
In 2008 they launched an anonymous online search engine but realized how crucial it was to have an option using mobile text messaging.
Refugee United was officially launched in September 2010.
