Shortcode/Reverse Billed SMS messages
Ericsson Limited has been receiving many calls from members of the public who have incorrectly been given the company’s name as being responsible for shortcode SMS messages that they have received. These are messages received from numbers with the format 6****, 7****, 8**** and are chargeable on reception, they are called Reverse Billed SMS messages.

Ericsson Limited is not responsible for sending premium rate or reverse billed SMS messages. The company provides infrastructure to many mobile operators and service providers including organisations that use these numbers; Ericsson works to ensure that consumers’ rights are observed.

What to do if you have received a Reverse Billed SMS messages
It is important that you text the word STOP back to the short code that you have received the text messages from. This should be the first step you take and should stop further messages being sent to you. To get support from Ericsson regarding these messages:

Please send details of your mobile telephone number and the shortcode number you have received to: ipx.support.uk@ericsson.com


By phone
Alternatively, you may leave a message with the details of your mobile telephone number and the shortcode number you have received on telephone number 01483 305530.


IMPORTANT
In all cases you must provide your mobile telephone number and the shortcode number.

If you have used a “keyword” to respond to an advert or competition please also provide us with that.


These contact points relate only to shortcode numbers that you have been told that Ericsson is responsible for.


Why have you received a Reverse Billed SMS message?
Although you may not realise, it is possible that you have subscribed to these services. If you have entered a competition advertised in a newspaper, web page, WAP site or TV advert using an SMS message you may have unwittingly signed up to receive premium rate reverse billed SMS messages that are chargeable on reception. Detail advising you that your number may receive further chargeable messages may have been contained in small print.


Further advice
If you are unable to stop messages using the STOP command and were billed for these messages you should report the details to your mobile service provider and ask that they escalate the matter. Serious penalties are in place for content providers who do not obey the STOP command.
