Advanced Networking System to Navy Test and Training Facility in Hawaii
Press Release

Ericsson Federal announced today that the company has deployed one of its most advanced networking systems, Ericsson’s Marconi Long Haul Trunk System (Marconi LH), to the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF).

This deployment is the first in the world for the Marconi LH, the only long haul radio system available that provides multiple OC-12C and supports full line rate Gigabit Ethernet connections. This advanced product offering provides the PMRF a full gigabit Ethernet channel with more bandwidth for applications such as streaming, real-time HD video.

“The Marconi LH is truly cutting-edge technology that will benefit the critical testing being done at the PMRF,” said Doug Smith, head of Ericsson Federal.  “It allows the facility to stream real-time voice, data or high definition with guaranteed reliability in a challenging physical location for communications.”

Ericsson’s new systems provide high-capacity diverse alternate links between two specific end points.

“The Navy replaced multiple microwave links at the PMRF that had reached bandwidth capacity and service life with Ericsson’s Marconi LH system that enables seamless communication across multi-leveled, rugged terrain,” said Rich Irwin, base communications manager for the PMRF.  “High reliability and redundancy were paramount as the network is used for high-value testing and training operations.”

Located on the western shores of Kauai, the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) at Barking Sands is the world's largest instrumented, multi-dimensional testing and training facility range. PMRF is the only range in the world where submarines, surface ships, aircraft and space vehicles can operate and be tracked simultaneously.

“The solution that Ericsson Federal is providing is a key component of the testing that is done at this facility.  Communications is mission critical and must be completely dependable and PMRF now has that reliability each day,” said Smith.
