At Comau, an advanced industrial automation leader, Alessandro and his team have used 5G to create an innovative new way of monitoring automated environments with external sensors in real-time. Relevant data is sent to a central ‘brain’ where it’s analysed, and then quickly applied where it’s needed. Thanks to the low latency and high bandwidth provided by 5G, the Comau team was recently able to experiment with removing communication cables from its digital hub in Turin. By exploiting the cable-free PLC communication over 5G, the team was able to create a more flexible system, with improved ergonomics and faster installations.
“With 5G, we have been able to simultaneously monitor a greater and more capillary number of sensors, located in different points. The data is available, cross-referenced and automatically processed using pattern recognition analytics to make predictive maintenance algorithms more effective."
