In the area of research and development (R&D), Ericsson employs some 700 staff in Germany, primarily at the locations in Herzogenrath and Frankfurt/Main.
With the Eurolab facilities located in Herzogenrath near Aachen, Ericsson operates an ICT development center in Germany. Eurolab represents an important strategic cornerstone within Ericsson's international ICT landscape including research as well as e2e solution development activities. Since the development of 2G, the site in Herzogenrath has been significantly involved in the research around every single mobile radio standard. In close cooperation with Ericsson's customers, the Eurolab develops global solutions for communications networks in the 5G technology domain and in the application fields of Industry 4.0, transport and energy.
Since July 2015, the Ericsson Cloud Lab has also been hosted in the Eurolab. In early 2018, Ericsson additionally opened the Ericsson IoT Business Lab with NRW´s Minister of Economic Affairs and Digitalization, Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart, in Herzogenrath near Aachen. The laboratory’s research focus puts emphasis on the Internet-of-Things (IoT) which is connected via the most modern mobile broadband technology. The facility serves as platform for business partners and their research projects in the field of the Internet-of-Things.
