SDG 7: Affordable and clean energy
SDG 7: "Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all". As the fastest and largest global technology uptake in history, mobile broadband has the potential to positively impact all of the 17 SDGs. While there are considerable challenges to be tackled in achieving this ambitious agenda, the examples of our products, services and solutions demonstrate the role ICT can play in accelerating the achievement of the Global Goals.
ICT's role in reaching this goal
We see huge potential for the ICT sector to provide solutions that reduce global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Our own research, shows that the total GHG emission reduction potential, thanks to ICT solutions in the areas of smart grids, transportation, buildings, work, travel, services, agriculture and land use, is about 10 Gigatonnes of CO2e in 2030, corresponding to 15.7 percent of global emissions.
ICT solutions making an impact
Green scheduler with Lean Carrier, South Korea
Together with SK Telecom, we have deployed an innovative energy-efficient traffic scheduler with Ericsson Lean Carrier to achieve 15% energy savings on SK Telecom’s total network. Under live network traffic environment, we verified that Green Scheduler could provide around 30W power saving (15%) even at 10% cell load.
Pure solar network
Together with Telenor, Ericsson is proving it is possible to build solar-only Radio Base Station sites more economical than diesel-hybrid sites in Myanmar. The positive business case demonstrates that a 100% solar solution is viable for rural access and brings true positive environmental impact. The innovative solution was awarded the Global Mobile Award by the GSMA in 2017.
100% solar site awarded the GLOMO Award 2017 by the GSMA.
