New app to combat the sexual abuse of children
Today at the UN high-level event on Solutions to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals for Children, Ericsson is proud to present a new app designed to prevent and detect the sexual abuse of children.
The idea was born one year ago at a similar UN event about the importance of children’s rights in the new global framework for sustainable development, where Ericsson participated in a panel discussion. The event was chaired by HRH Queen Silvia of Sweden, the founder of World Childhood Foundation, an organization whose mission is to defend children’s rights to a happy and safe childhood, free from sexual abuse and exploitation. At the end of the event, Queen Silvia gave Ericsson a challenge – to create an app that would help protect children from sexual abuse.
As a long-standing advocate of using Technology for Good, Ericsson is committed to applying our technology and expertise to help meet global challenges by working together with partners in areas like climate change, poverty, education, health, humanitarian issues and human rights – including children’s rights and protection. Last year’s event coincided with the adoption of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – including goal 16 on peace and justice, and 16.2, in particular, on the protection of children – so we were particularly inspired to rise to Queen Silvia’s challenge.
Working together with World Childhood Foundation in the US, and an organization called Darkness to Light, we have developed the “Stewards of Children Prevention Toolkit” mobile app. This is a first-of-its kind mobile application that equips adults – caretakers, teachers and parents – with the skills and resources necessary to recognize, prevent and respond to child sexual abuse.
Protection of children is something that should resonate with everyone, everywhere. Individuals, companies and NGOs all have the opportunity to make a difference. Issues like child sexual abuse can be difficult to confront and deal with yet each of us can be positive agents of change in our own spheres of influence. For Ericsson, developing this app fits well within our Technology for Good efforts and aligns with our company’ core values. We know that technology can amplify the impact and scale the reach of this important message.
I encourage everyone to download and use the app, and help us to spread the word about its availability. You can find it at www.socapp.org
