Network slicing orchestration—automation from design to assurance
Automation and the ability to customize enhances service performance and customer satisfaction. Orchestration enables the automation of creation and delivery of services. Network slicing is a mechanism that allows operators to offer customized services with shorter time to market. Ericsson presented a network slicing orchestration demo at SDN NFV World Congress and in this blog we will go through the benefits of implementing it in the network.
Network slicing enables new revenues
With private LTE and 5G come new services, as well as enhancements of existing services, that will help operators to boost new revenue streams. The new services can come in different flavors like factory robotics control, remote healthcare, live video streaming, augmented reality or smart metering. They also come with specific and tailored requirements like very low latency, very high throughput, or low cost.
Network slicing enables operators to create, test and deploy those services in a controlled environment. At the same time, it guarantees personalized service level agreement (SLA) for each use case.
Economic benefit of network slicing
Industry verticals are eager to implement digitalization and leverage on new technologies to boost productivity. As the number of services increases, the network needs to be prepared to manage a large number of slices. Dynamic orchestration is key to automate services end-to-end, from initial design until life cycle management of network slices.
The automation of the service starts with blueprints based on TOSCA templates, followed by the design of the service (made of physical and virtual network functions), design of the transport between datacenters, configuration and establishment of the service and ending up with service level assurance. The investment in the automation of network slices can be quickly returned. Ericsson in partnership with British Telecom conducted a study that shows potential increase in revenue of 35% when using network slicing for new service introduction.
