Climate action: collaborating to create an Exponential Roadmap
Together with Future Earth, the UK Science and Innovation Network, TNO, WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) and inno4sd.net, Ericsson co-hosted a two-day workshop in Stockholm last week on the topic of exponential climate action for cities. The purpose was to bring leading researchers, tech companies, innovators, international organizations (including the World Bank) and city representatives from across the globe together to start mapping out climate action areas in cities. The results, which include a suggestion for concrete systemic actions for cities, will contribute toward the creation of an Exponential Roadmap for the Climate Action Summit in California in September.
Future Earth is a global network of people, projects and institutions committed to catalyzing research, connecting knowledge and finding new ways to accelerate sustainable development. The network is committed to developing the knowledge and tools that countries around the world need to meet the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It also works to achieve the ambitions of related agreements such as the Paris Agreement on climate change, the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction. The Stockholm hub of Future Earth leads the global decarbonization program that last week’s workshop was a part of.
The workshop focused on three areas: (1) mobility and logistics, (2) buildings, and (3) integrated, complex systems. In each of these areas we discussed the best examples of rapid emission reductions, the massive opportunities opening up with new technologies, and the role of societal change and policy actions. We reviewed and discussed a number of exponential solutions for people and goods in the urban space, including smart commuting, telepresence and the promise of self-driving cars. Stefan Myhrberg, Ericsson’s Global Head of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) held one of the “quick talks” in the agenda, during which he presented our approach to Connected Urban Transport.
Our discussions about buildings centered on the theme of “fast solutions for a slow-moving sector”, considering aspects such as shared spaces and sensor-controlled ventilation. These conversations were closely connected to the topic of integrated and complex systems, which centered on smart grids, buildings communicating with power and heat networks, and open city data-bridging across city sectors. Jo Arne Lindstad, Ericsson’s Global Engagement Director for Smart Sustainable Cities, presented a great overview of the Ericsson Smart Buildingsconcept.
Future Earth with take the lead in the production of the Exponential Roadmap report. The next step involves gathering further inputs from all the workshop participants, as well as other interested parties. If you would like to provide inputs to the report we would be happy to receive them in the comments section below. We are looking for specific examples of exponential information and communication solutions – either proof points or technologies/policies that have huge potential.
