How to make E2E orchestration a blissful experience

Automation and operational savings are the top benefits stated by operators who have already implemented NFV/SDN. More than 80% of operators from all over the world are committed to implement NFV/SDN as part of their network evolution strategy in the next coming years. In this blog post I will share with you how dynamic orchestration can help you achieve automation and operational savings.

This can be achieved, not only when implementing virtualization centralized in your network, but also when migrating to multi-vendor cloud deployment, or evolving to new business models with distributed cloud.

Automation journey

Challenges and opportunities in the automation journey

One big challenge in virtualization is to work with open source and at the same time keep quality of service and security. Ericsson is a platinum member of OpenStack, OPNFV and OpenDaylight and has been contributing intensely with upstream development, bug fixing and documentation task to make sure a carrier grade quality is achieved. On the other hand, virtualization brings the great benefit of making a service available faster to the end user. Orchestration is a key enabler of the introduction of self-provisioning of services, like mobile VPN, that can make services available faster to end user by reducing offering from days to hours.

Some identified challenges of a cloud deployment are onboarding of the applications, DevOps and CI/CD in a multivendor environment. Dynamic Orchestration can automate testing, onboarding and certification of multi-vendor VNFs by cutting time in installation from weeks to days. Upgrades can be done in real time without disruption.Closed loop orchestration is another important task that brings the great benefit of transforming manual interventions into an automated network by auto-healing detected problems on the infrastructure resource or application level.

When addressing new use cases in the 5G industry verticals, it's challenging to keep e2e service quality when the application can be located closer to the end user, in a central local or sitting in the public cloud. By slicing your network to fulfill e2e service level agreement of a specific service, you are able to assure that service creation, network resource configuration and service fulfillment are not only automated, but also able to work seamless cross-domain covering 5G, its enabling transport and application components.
