Why compatibility and 5G interoperability are crucial for success
We’re getting down to the nitty-gritty of 5G as we move the trials from test beds to a commercial system. As part of this journey, Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, have begun 3GPP-compliant 5G New Radio (NR) multi-vendor interoperability testing on commercial platforms in Qualcomm’s San Diego lab.
The commercial system used for these interoperability tests is designed for mmWave spectrum and uses Ericsson Radio System radio AIR5331 and a mobile test device powered by the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X50 5G modem. We’re conducting early testing to help service providers carry out live testing in their own networks. There’s a saying “practice makes perfect” or in this case, testing until we get it right, so that we can ensure a smooth transition to the next generation of mobile technology. Having compatible network systems and chipset platforms are the foundation for successfully launching 5G networks and devices later this year.
Back in December 2017, Ericsson and Qualcomm demonstrated a multi-vendor interoperability connection that was compliant with the Non-Standalone (NSA) 5G New Radio (NR) global 3GPP standard. NSA will support early commercial launches of 5G already in 2018. Deploying standard-based 5G networks will help address the increasing global demand for enhanced mobile broadband services.
The live demonstrations, collaborated with multiple service providers, showcased both Sub-6 GHz and mmWave end-to-end 5G NR systems using Ericsson’s 5G NR pre-commercial base stations and Qualcomm Technologies’ 5G NR UE prototypes. These demos served as a major milestone toward standard-compliant trials and commercialization, as part of an ongoing industry collaboration to accelerate the commercial deployment of 5G NR.
Our continued collaboration with Qualcomm shows our combined strength in carrying out timely trials that will pave the way for commercial launches of 5G standard-compliant infrastructure and devices. With the full release 15 NR standard finalized on June 13, we will sustain this momentum – together with ecosystem partners – to ensure that service providers can successfully launch 3GPP standard-based 5G networks.
