How to handle 5G migration successfully

There’s no doubt the evolution of 5G is gaining momentum. But migrating to 5G is a multi-faceted process, with many aspects to consider along the way. I recently had the opportunity to share my thoughts on 5G network evolution with Mobile World Live during Mobile World Congress, Shanghai. There, I gave my recommendations for operators who are looking to evolve from their current 4G Core network to 5G.

A successful 5G migration hinges on a stable end-to-end system, and a 5G Core solution is the foundation for this. It’s here that network services come together and can cater for the speed and flexibility that 5G requires to enable new business models and revenue opportunities.

Three ways to evolve core networks from 4G to 5G:

Right now, the evolution of networks is key. NFV is the foundation of any successful 5G deployment. Not only does it make the network programmable, it also opens the door to capabilities like Network Slicing and expands network opportunities from consumers to whole industries. Virtualization with automation is also a crucial step in this process to make sure software is handled, migrated and updated in the right way. From a wider perspective, building a future-proof end-to-end strategy is important. Radio, core and automation all need to be aligned for an efficient and streamlined network.

The path towards 5G

As networks expand and become more complex, simplification will become increasingly important. At the same time, we’re looking ahead to building networks that can be operated, expanded and exposed to other industries such as automotive industries and manufacturing. This is a fine balance and depends on the continuing collaboration with many different partners. But there are many opportunities ahead if we can make this happen: more services for consumers, new business models and revenue streams, and a huge impact on many different industries. The end result? A scalable, streamlined 5G ecosystem that spans consumers and industries, and I have no doubt that this will be achieved. The evolution to 5G is looking bright.
