Private vs Public Networks: A Utility Case Study

FirstEnergy deployed private 700MHz licensed, 4G LTE FirstNet, and 4G LTE public carrier field area networks as its primary communications for low voltage transmission SCADA, distribution SCADA, and grid modernization devices including reclosers and capacitor banks. Each option serves a purpose in a larger solution designed to ensure a more reliable, secure, and growing set of services. Additionally, signal testing is a large part of the decision process and remote signal testing will be discussed including testing from ground level and using drones to antenna height requirements. This presentation explains why FirstEnergy chose a multi-technology path for its field area network and the decision process for each site.

How 5G Will Bring Increased Capabilities to the Grid

5G is much more than a network – it’s a platform for innovation with the ability to provide immediate scale and enable use cases that we haven’t even dreamed of yet. One key difference with 5G is that it’s the most open and flexible architecture we’ve seen.

 And with the evolution of the 5G device ecosystem, many 3GPP enhancements will be available for use in grid modernization. Among others, these will include network slicing, rapid acquisition of internet connections, enhanced capabilities in narrowband IoT, reduced opex with increased sustainability.

In this session we’ll explore these enhancements and their impact within utilities. We’ll also address the spectrum dependencies of these 5G capabilities and will provide recommendations around maximizing 5G spectrum utilization.

The Importance of Spectrum Selection for Field Area Network Deployments

Selecting the appropriate spectrum for Field Area Network deployments is one of the most important decisions a utility can make. As utilities move from narrowband communications networks to wideband or broadband networks that can support larger amounts of data and device quantities, spectrum plays a key role in that process. Most utilities will need to acquire spectrum on the secondary market at fair market value from a spectrum owner/broker at prices higher than utilities are used to paying. This is a paradigm shift for most utilities that have leased narrowband channels from the FCC for almost free in the past.

Understanding the costs and benefits that licensed broadband spectrum provides is foundational to grid modernization strategies where private wireless is a key component.

This presentation will cover what considerations utilities should make when evaluating spectrum alternatives and what spectrum options are available to support Field Area Network deployments and the technologies those spectrum bands can support.
