Public safety

The public safety sector relies on innovative technologies to shield citizens from preventable injuries and dangers. All aspects of public safety operations can be enhanced by 4G and 5G network solutions that improve response times and increase day-to-day efficiency.

Protecting the people

For emergency service teams, reliable communication is crucial. With mission-critical broadband at their disposal, public safety personnel and relevant command and control centers can cross-communicate more efficiently, transmit important data securely via on-person devices, and bolster their situational awareness during dangerous situations.

In some cases, the difference between a reliable and unreliable network could be the difference between life and death. To ensure high standards of public safety, emergency services of all kinds – including police forces, firefighting squads and emergency medical services – are transitioning to a more capable and reliable communications network.

Adopt future-proof technologies

An expanded and secure ecosystem

The mobile technologies and communications standards that underpin the day-to-day operations of public safety teams can determine the quality of their performance in moments of crisis. The transition from legacy systems towards mission critical broadband and enhanced situational awareness starts with mission critical LTE networks, and to prepare for the switch to the mission critical 5G standard, public safety organizations will first implement 5G mobile technology as an addition.

Most public safety organizations currently make use of Land Mobile Radio (LMR) for network communication. The migration to mission-critical 4G already enhances critical operations with data-rich devices and applications. 5G will further enable a much larger, open and fully secure ecosystem and ensure network performance to help save more lives.

Use cases

critical communication network

Governments that want to deploy their own dedicated networks for mission-critical communication stand to gain substantial benefits by doing so using commercial cellular 3GPP technology. This approach enables the creation of a symbiotic network configuration that is capable of addressing all kinds of critical communication needs in a society, thereby supporting both public protection and disaster relief (PPDR) and the ongoing digitalization of society.

Solutions that save lives

Mission-critical broadband enables seamless cooperation between first responder agencies. With a secure mission-critical broadband connection, medical systems can report real-time patient data, complemented by video for added insights. It allows medical staff in the field to receive prompt instructions from doctors and subsequently provide life-saving assistance at a much faster rate. Medical response teams can also utilize a wide range of new applications, such as AI-based voice analytics, to monitor a caller’s condition for accurate pre-diagnosis of, for example, heart attacks, and take preventive measures.

Innovation to empower first responders

Communication plays a vital role in emergency response and disaster relief. Extended, flexible and agile network coverage literally saves lives. For first responders, a network which can track them wherever they go, outdoors or indoor, regardless of terrain, could make a major difference. An Ericsson proof of concept (PoC) innovation – an easy to deploy, 150 g temporary cellular network mounted on a drone successfully provides mission-critical voice and video connectivity services in areas with poor or zero network coverage.

Advance operations

A more capable network and shorter response times

The unpredictable nature of emergencies makes immediate response a necessity – regardless of the situation at hand.

Society entrusts its public safety services with being as effective as possible, making response teams highly dependent on a reliable network for transmitting secure communications wherever needed throughout the day. A more capable network expands the possibilities of a response team’s operations so that they can always act with total precision.

Use cases

Erillisverkot and Ericsson

Enabling next-generation public safety networks with 4G and 5G

Together with Erillisverkot Group in Finland, Ericsson realizes mission critical connectivity needs by providing the next-generation dual-mode core network products and solutions for Erillisverkot's mission critical broadband network.

Increasing efficiency with a mobile office

The mobile office application allows police officers to save a significant amount of time by completing paperwork duties away from police headquarters. As a result, they can dedicate more time and attention to their daily patrols.

Connectivity as a driving force for security

Securing actionable information quickly and reliably is essential for any police force. With a fast and robust communications network, patrol officers can remotely access database queries to perform background checks on suspicious individuals or vehicles.

Unlock intelligence

Using data as a tool

The situational awareness that a fast and intelligent network provides means emergency services can be more informed and capable than ever before.

Given the vital importance of protecting the public from harm, emergency services that depend on a reliable network must also enforce strong cybersecurity measures to obstruct malicious actors from disrupting public stability.

Use cases

Fighting fire with improved perception

To maintain communication and situational awareness amid poor visibility, fire crews can keep tabs on squad positioning in real time via location tracking and indoor positioning powered by the Ericsson Radio Dot System. They can also take the precaution of piloting a remotely controlled drone to call out particularly hazardous areas without risking a firefighter’s well-being.

Intelligent assurances

A 5G-enabled ambulance service can connect the patient and ambulance crew with the medical personnel awaiting their arrival, therefore reducing the number of in-hospital referrals.

Protection at every level

Security systems, like the Ericsson Security Manager, constantly monitor network systems to flag intruders attempting to access confidential data points or scramble communication channels.
