Network slicing enables multiple logical networks to operate on a shared physical network infrastructure by creating “slices” that are logically separated, self-contained, independent and secured. Network slicing offers an efficient blend of characteristics from both public and private networks. It leverages the broad geographical coverage of public radio networks and the convenience and ease of purchasing and activating services. It also offers a higher degree of connectivity customization and traffic isolation, while the network remains owned and operated by communication service providers (CSPs).

This combination of convenience and coverage, deployment flexibility and speed, and performance and security offers a solution that is well suited to many enterprises with less stringent requirements or without the resources to purchase and operate a private network.

An end-to-end approach to network slicing

Establishing a well-designed network slicing solution requires a comprehensive, end-to-end approach that integrates key functionalities across three critical layers: monetization, automation and the network itself. By aligning these layers, a well-structured framework can deliver flexible, efficient and secure connectivity, tailored to the unique demands of diverse applications and industries.

The monetization layer provides tools for managing contracts and service-level agreements (SLAs) with customers, partners and suppliers. Within this layer, operations and business support systems (OSS/BSS) solutions manage service characteristics specified by SLAs. Retail and wholesale aspects – such as charging, billing, taxation, dunning, revenue assurance and financial reporting – are also handled in the monetization layer.

The automation layer is essential for dynamic network slicing, enabling the rapid provisioning of slices, resource adjustments and network performance optimization to meet customer needs. Effective automation solutions should offer multi-domain service orchestration and assurance, supporting multi-vendor environments and streamlining workflows for service design, ordering and fulfilment. Assurance enables the monitoring of service performance and SLA compliance, critical components for network slicing success.

The network layer is foundational for enabling end-to-end network slicing, and requires an integrated set of enablers in the three domains of the network:

  1. Radio Access Network (RAN): RAN slicing is essential for strengthening end-to-end network slicing support for resource management and orchestration. It enables dynamic optimization of radio resource allocation and service differentiation both within and between slices for guaranteed SLA fulfilment.
  2. Transport: traffic from a network slice, or group of slices, should be mapped to transport resources that meet the required SLA, considering the capabilities and capacity of the transport infrastructure. While many enablers in the transport domains support network slicing use cases, quality of service (QoS) mechanisms and IP ranges are sufficient entry points for most.
  3. Core: core enablers – defined by the 3GPP – make it possible to define dedicated or shared network functions (NFs) at design time. This allows for the dynamic allocation of dedicated or shared user plane, control plane, and data layer NFs.

Close coordination between BSS and OSS is required to meet on-demand slicing needs with DevOps and agile practices enhancing flexibility, vertical capabilities and process automation.
