Ericsson Silicon leads 5G with advanced technology and outstanding performance
- Ericsson-LG held “Ericson Silicon Day” media briefing on April 28
- Consistent R&D investment and strong commitment to technology leadership
- Ericsson Silicon enabling 5G performance maximization and energy optimization goals at the same time
Ericsson-LG held a media briefing for invited reporters on April 28 under the theme of “Ericson Silicon Day.” At this briefing, Ericsson-LG introduced Ericsson 5G technology and global R&D capabilities, as well as Ericsson Silicon, the core of Ericsson's 5G performance proven not only in Korea but also in many countries around the world.
In particular, this briefing was held at the Ericsson-LG Seoul R&D Center, which has led the development of Korean mobile communication technologies from 2G to 5G, and confirmed the commitment to strengthen technology leadership through continuous R&D investment.
Ericsson-LG picked Ericsson Silicon as the background for Ericsson's selection as the most advanced company in 5G technology leadership recently announced by global market research organizations including Gartner. Ericsson Silicon is a SoC (System on a Chip) type of ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuits) which in was tightly co-designed of hardware and software from the initial stage of product planning to maximize the performance of the entire mobile platform – RAN Compute, Radio and Transport.
Ericsson Silicon has been applied to Ericsson's flagship radio lineup, Ericsson Radio System (ERS), and has greatly improved the parallel processing performance, which is the core of product performance, to meet the two goals of improving 5G network performance and maximizing energy efficiency at the same time.
Ericsson Silicon has also been the driving force behind the implementation of innovative new technologies such as Ericsson uplink boosters and Ericsson spectrum sharing. The current energy efficiency has increased by up to 7 times compared to products released by 2016.
Hakan Cervell, CEO of Ericsson-LG, said, “Ericsson has been applying customized ASICs to its commercial products for many years, and has continuously strengthened its investment in R&D capabilities to realize the best product performance and optimal energy efficiency. As we did with Ericsson Silicon, we will continue to support our customers to satisfy the market and their needs through technological innovation in the future.”
