Today, China Mobile officially launched its TD-LTE commercial networks in Hong Kong. At the event, Ericsson showcased a series of innovative applications based on TD-LTE data roaming, having supported China Mobile in realizing the first ever such service between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, a city in China’s Guangdong Province.

The demonstration was supported by the LTE FDD/TDD converged commercial networks deployed by Ericsson in Hong Kong, as well as the TD-LTE Evolved Packet Core (EPC), In-Building Solution (IBS) site and universal SIM (USIM) deployed by Ericsson in Shenzhen. The demonstration showcased real-time high-definition video interaction between the two cities on TD-LTE networks for the first time.

The demonstration involved the LTE FDD/TDD dual-mode terminal in Hong Kong providing roaming to Shenzhen, and the TD-LTE terminal in Shenzhen providing roaming to Hong Kong. Thanks to the LTE RAN in both Hong Kong and Shenzhen and the international transmission network, the live video interaction was of high quality in terms of both voice and images, and was characterized by very limited latency.

This high-speed, seamless, smooth user experience was enabled by the TD-LTE and LTE FDD/TDD converged networks provided by Ericsson, which consist of cutting-edge TD-LTE products from its portfolio, including the RBS 6000 multi-standard radio base station, Evolved Packet Core and eNodeB IBS.

By using TD-LTE technology, consumers can build a “temporary dedicated channel” with bandwidth, latency and service quality assurance through a wireless dongle to realize high-end commercial applications, such as camera-over-LTE and video conferencing, any time and anywhere. This also brings telecom operators a host of brand-new business opportunities.

Mats H Olsson, President of Ericsson North East Asia, says: “The maturity of the TD-LTE ecosystem and the ever-expanding TD-LTE network deployments around the world are putting an urgent demand on international roaming with TD-LTE, which is key to true TD-LTE globalization in the future. Ericsson is honored to be supporting China Mobile in achieving this technology and market breakthrough, and we look forward to playing an even more active role in China Mobile’s TD-LTE deployments in the future.”

From a global perspective, Ericsson has now signed more than 100 LTE/EPC contracts and maintains an undisputed leading position in LTE and mobile broadband, providing coverage for 305 million of the 455 million global LTE population.
