Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and Bell Aliant received a Global Telecoms Business Innovation Award 2012 in the Fixed Network Infrastructure Innovation category at the awards ceremony in London on Tuesday evening, recognizing Ericsson’s successful work with Bell Aliant. Bell Aliant is the first service provider in Canada to deploy FTTH (fibre-to-the-home) technology across an entire city and bring a 100 per cent fibre optic network directly to customers’ homes.
"Ericsson has been a critical partner to Bell Aliant as we deploy Canada’s first fibre-to-the-home network to 650,000 homes and businesses in our region," said Sheldon MacDonald, Vice President of Network Strategy and Engineering, Bell Aliant. "Our goal is to provide the fastest Internet, the ultimate high-definition TV experience, and the best customer experience in the markets we serve. Ericsson’s solution had made is possible for us to meet – and in many cases, exceed – our targets for cost and time which is great for our business and for our customers."
This award recognizes Ericsson’s Plan-to-Provision for Fixed Broadband solution that Bell Aliant began to use in 2010. Deploying this solution allowed Bell Aliant to accelerate its FTTH rollout in 2011 to 320,000 premises with the goal of reaching 650,000 homes by the end of 2012. Bell Aliant used the company’s Geospatial Inventory solution to completely automate the network-design process, significantly improving the availability, quality, and use of network data that enables engineers to work faster and more efficiently. As of March 2012, the network has reached more than 516,000 homes.
"This award reflects Ericsson’s leadership in network planning and is a true testament to the capabilities of our industry-leading Plan-to-Provision solution. Our work with Bell Aliant demonstrates that it is one of a few solutions on the market today that can fully automate labour-intensive design processes at scale while still keeping pace with the very latest innovations in fibre network design," said Elisabetta Romano, Vice President, Head of OSS, Business Unit Support Solutions, Ericsson.
