Ericsson announced today that it has been named a 2012 Internet Telephony BSS/OSS Excellence Award winner by TMC, a global, integrated media company. The award recognizes the company’s work with JT Group, the leading telecommunications provider for the Island of Jersey (UK), for its role in helping JT to achieve its vision of providing gigabit-speed broadband services to every home and business on the island by 2016.
Erik Linask, Editorial Director of Internet Telephony said: "The BSS/OSS Excellence Awards provide recognition for contribution to the growth of and innovation displayed in an increasingly complex and vital market." Ericsson was recognized for its Plan to Provision for Fixed Broadband solution, a network planning and design solution that enables rapid rollout of broadband networks such as fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and mobile backhaul.
Elisabetta Romano, Head of OSS, Business Unit Support Solutions, Ericsson said: “The Ericsson solution is helping JT Group reduce cost and save time, two critical factors in any network rollout. The result has been invaluable to the Island of Jersey by enabling fast FTTH builds that are creating new jobs and boosting the economy. We are very proud of being named a BSS/OSS Excellence Award Winner once again, and believe it reflects our commitment to helping our customers succeed through our world-class software and services.”
Implementation of the Ericsson solution at JT began in January 2012 and was deployed in less than six months. It is now speeding the Gigabit Jersey project at JT, designed to provide the island with the fastest broadband network possible through a ubiquitous FTTH infrastructure. The project retires the island’s copper network and enables all 90,000 islanders to access broadband speeds up to 1GB, more than 50 times faster than the island’s current network. The new speeds will open up new opportunities for both local businesses and investors in the development of the island’s digital economy.
The Ericsson solution provides a map-based system for planning, designing, and documenting complex communications networks, and is instrumental in supporting an efficient fiber build. The cornerstone of the solution is Ericsson Network Engineer, a highly scalable geographic information system (GIS) that has replaced JT’s manual paper-based network planning process with a streamlined and automated solution. The group has already seen a 400-percent increase in productivity, and future efficiency gains are anticipated as the operator expands its FTTH deployments across its other operating markets in the Channel Islands and elsewhere.
